Mechanical Trim gauge
 

Next issue to sort out one my 02 353 is the mechanical trim indicator. Both drives and indicators go up to the full in position but when trimming out the starboard indicator stops at 3 while the port keeps going to full out. I did make a mistake and run the stud trim without the bump stop in place ( I was installing drive showers and wanted to see clearance). I would not think that created a problem, but maybe it did??). The indicator assy on the trim cylinder looks to be positioned exactly the same as the port drive. Almost as though the indicator is not fully releasing ( is it spring loaded?). Is this something I can correct from the indicator on the helm? I don't want to mess with it until I understand how it works and possible causes. thanks all.

The cable is spring loaded on the drive end. With the drive raised you can pull the black plastic piece outward. I have seen them stick, especially at the beginning of the season.

Marine grease and working it in and out should fix it. As underpsi said, they like to stick at the beginning of the season.

If there is a spring, is it retained by the inlet nut/coupler at the end near the transome? If I loosen that nut (to lubricate) is the spring strong/too strong to grease?

Tom, they just get stuck. There is a spring that forces the plunger out against the trim ram mount. Work with back and forth with marine grease at the bore opening. There are also some holes in the housing that you can spray Aerokroil into - should loosen it up and help to clean it out some. The marine grease will last long to keep it lubed.
