Sorry for the delayed reply. Looks like you got it figured out! I did it myself like you did. The plastic had expanded and was loose on the nipple. Pretty clear that it was allowing air to get sucked in. Went with welded tubes and the issue went away. Be sure to use a good fuel compatible sealer on the fitting pipe threads that screw in the tank. This will make sure no fuel seeps out when the tank if full and it is sloshing around.

I use this (and the high temp red) on all vehicle related pipe threads. Most all auto parts stores have it.

Thanks for the up date. It looks like the tank mfg used regular pipe dope. So really not sure what to use on the threads for gas?
