Relationship between the 242 and 272?
I read in another thread that the old 242 was the basis for the 272, and the 272 was a 242 hull with an intregrated (sort of) swim platform. True, false? Boilermaker, you out there?
Just doing a bit of family research here.... |
Check this thread, there is quite a bit about the models/sizes.

Here's an older 311, but it has been upgraded with bravo's and new paint. I think I drive by this one on the way to the pass.
I was just searching 311's and are ALL of them the same Palm Beach grafics? http://adcache.boattraderonline.com/6/1/8/40274718.htm |
I found an '89 242 for sale online and looked at the pictures. Comparing it to ours (272), it looks like the 242 has a similar cockpit and smaller sunpad. The BIG difference was in the cabin. The couches in front of the V-berth were shorter than the 272. Ours are between 3-4 ft. long, where the 242 looked about 2 ft. long.

I own a 272 and have been on 242's. Yeah , the cabin is shorter ,mostly all in the couches. The cockpit was similar but just a little shorter. The sunpad is also shorter , since part of the rear seat actually covers the engine and goes up with the engine hatch whereas the 272 has a larger sunpad and stationary rear seat. The 242 is diffenitely easier to work on:rolleyes:

Both 242's & 272's never had integral swim platform. early models had bolt on teak platform and later models had bolt-on silent thunder platform. Basically 242 is a short 272, or 272 is a stretched 242 in terms of physical relationship. Most of difference is in cabin , although 272 does pick up a little more room on cockpit. The 242 LS or SS has easier access with single engine. But the 242-Sr1 with twin small blocks is an equal pain in the ass to work on as the 272.

I'm thinking hard about this particular 242 - it's near my house and the price is right to get us on the lake in something this year, rather than waiting another year without a boat.
Formula 242 |
I know, ugly isn't it? That would be very high on my list of things to change!
|
Description on listing is wrong. Boat is not a 242-SR1, if it's an '88. The Sr1 was twin small blocks. '88 was last year for this option. This boat with the single 7.4 is actually a F-242LS. In '88 only the SR-1 series came with the Kiekhaefer shifters as standard. From photos appears to be a nice ride, especially with the optional bolsters. Now if only a little more HP...... Good luck.

Can you say "540"
|
Mopower
Do you have those 540's in your boat yet?:D :D |
You guys are a bad influence - hell, a 330 hp in that little 24'er ought to be good for 60 or so, right? Fast enough... well, for now anyway :D
Come on W-2, I need to see if Mr. Taxman sees a new boat this year! :D :D |
60+

I had a F-242SS that I put a 468ci and Bravo I with a 21P prop, I couldn't get over 53 MPH out of it!! When a bass boat BLEW past me; thats when I sold it and bought a F-292 SR-1 with 454 mags:D ...now I see 70 MPH (and haven't seen a bass boat blow past me yet!)!! Luckily, the speed bug hasn't bit me, so 70 MPH is plenty.

Russ SR1,
Not yet , but getting closer day by day. Blocks are done , cranks balanced , rings file fitted , intakes and heads are gasket matched ,also some bowl work and a 5 angle valve job. Heads still need assy and rods need to be sized , as I tried one of the pins and it was a little snug:eek:. Got new circulating pumps , new high volume Carter intern. reg. fuel pumps , new hp500 oil coolers. Still gotta order my crank driven sea water pumps. Got B & B polished and clear powder coated valve covers and the intakes and t-stat housings were powder coated magenta to go with the trim:cool: Blocks are black. This is being done by a buddy's shop in between money making jobs that of course get more preferential treatment , after all he DOES have to eat and pay bills:rolleyes: Got my dash ripped apart right now. New white panels are coming from Mear Image along with 17 new guages in white. adding oil temp , water press. and fuel press. to current arrangement. The waiting is driving me:crazy: |
Mopower,
You know you might just end up with one of the fastest 272's out there.:D :D If I remember right the hook was taken out of your hull befor you got it or was that someone else. anyway what are you gona do for drives? or is it gona be the right hand drive saver. I have been pondering the idea of updating the dash as well. Make sure to post plenty of pics when you are done. Russ |
Russ,
My bottom is factory with the two hooks right in front of the tabs:confused: . Not sure if this is good or bad. My drives? Ones a 95 the other is an 02 standard Bravo. Time will tell:rolleyes:. There's people here who have run 6 or 700 hp thru them for years , and people who break the HP ones with HP500's. It seems to have a lot to do with the way you drive:D. My last boat had a 625hp , 710 ft lb torque 540 through an OMC King Cobra:eek: Guess what, it worked. Just listened to two OMC mechanics...no straight arm "hole shots" and don't catch too much "air" , that re-entry can play hell on drives. Three years later the current owner of my old one is still running the same drive , trouble free(with stock power). I don't have a dig. camera yet , but my builder does , so as they go together I'll get some pix. Their also being dynoed:cool: Also looking forward to hyd.steering for less than $500 too:drool: |
I have a 91 242LS with a real fresh 502 30 over all the wistlles in a naturally asperated motor Dyno a little on the high side of 450hp barely push 61 with my Hydromotive 4blade, spins 5300. With my Labbed Quicksilver 3blade I lick 65 but damn thats one heavy boat! Still love it though!
