353/525's/Stellings
Going to Arkansas Sat,ran it today. Wow!Did a little prop swapping, wound up with 34 labs. Didnt have a GPS hooked up but 95 on speedo was pretty sweet. Last 353 with 575SCi's and boxes only speedoed 94. Subtract for optimistic speedo it is still smokin big time. More details later when the Gps goes in.:)

Was that the same combo I read in a magazine lately? I can't remember which mag, but it was a 353. Sure sounds like a sweet ride. What would the speed be of the same package on a 382?
|
The 353 that was tested in PB and HB did not have boxes. The additional performance and handling gained with Stellings boxes is much greater than is generally admitted. 382's benfit too but the 382 is big and heavy and very comfortable, just not killer fast without killer horsepower. It responds very well to big power, but there may be drive issues. I maket the 382 as a gentleman's performance boat, your friends may outrun you but you can relax in the cabin with the genset and A/C on while you watch TV. :):)

Robert, did you ever run the 382 brochure boat with 500its to top end? If so,what did you get? Thanx
|
Still tryin props, low 70's gps with stock 30's,lab30's should add a little, but I have 190 gal fuel, lot of extra weight. Will test more this weekend, think 74 gps with half fuel should be about right, maybe 75 gps if I get props just right, have a few more to try.

ballpark me i have a 98 353 with 500 hp's (carbs) what will boxes do for me? the thought of boxes has always intrigued me.
in a retro fit how hard is the steering change(factory latham)? thanks |
It's a tough upgrade cause the X-dimension is higher when boxes are installed

Originally posted by Troutly I knew I should have bought the damn boat instead of finishing the house.....  Yeah but instead of finishing the house, you would of been building a nice dog house :). Finish the house THEN buy the boat....works every time :) Those are some sweet speeds hey Troutly ;). Robert's the man when it comes to testing the new arrivals for the OSO crew. Thanks Robert. |
New owner is installing GPS tomorrow, should have real speeds to post soon

Not yrt, still trying props. BTW,your 31's left today UPS

Anything new on this? Very curious to hear what the top end will be on GPS.

We are delivering a new 353 with 525's and Stellings boxes. Ran it with 31" Hydromotives from my F-2 boat and hit 89.9 on the GPS on the rev limiters. Still tweaking and will report back with final results. Boat is VERY fast, though, and makes you pay attention!

Tom, my customer just ran 33 merc labs made from 34's,i/2 tank fuel,2 people, hot and humid Arkansas weather,86.2 GPS,we are getting there, the 5 blade Hydromotives Formula sent did not work well, not enough pitch.
|
Just tested the 353 with Merc 32" lab 4-bladers from my race boat, turning inward. 90.5 mph on the GPS heading east, 87.6 mph on the GPS heading west, for a two-way average of 89.05. I think the inward rotation gives a little more bow lift, freeing up the hull without having to trim so much. One engine still hits the rev limiter at times, but I think that this is about it speed-wise.
Try the inward rotation and see if it helps. Regards, Tom |
TOM OR TGC-32 WHERE ARE YOU RUNNING YOUR TRIM & TABS HOW MANY PEOPLE & FUEL .SOUNDS LIKE ITS RUNNING GREAT.MY BOAT HAS THE SAME SETUP STILL TRYING DIFFERENT PROPS .OURS RAN 86.2 GPS MERC 33 LAB ONE \HALF TANK FUEL.I WILL TRY SPINNING THE PROPS IN THIS WEEKEND & SEE WHAT IT DOES .ALSO WHAT DOES THIS DO TO THE HANDLING OF THE BOAT.......THANKS REX

Very impressive speeds :)

The Good Stuff:
Tabs are all the way up. You would be surprised at how much the drag of the trim tabs actually slows you down. Obviously, you need the right water conditions. Drives are trimmed out to about nmber 7, but the trim scales on the indicators are unique to each boat so you have to do it by feel. Keep bumping the trim out while you are watching the GPS speedo. I got my best results with 1/4 tank of fuel with just me in it, but the engines only have 5 or six hours and are still tight. We do have an agressive "X" dimesnsion, though. I asked the factory to set it up 1" higher than normal, figuring I could always space it back down if we were too high. I do have to say that 90 MPH is probably faster than most pleasure boats should go. PLEASE PAY ATTENTION AT THESAE SPEEDS! Tom |
Good Stuff,I'm pretty sure your boat has the same aggresive X -dimension as Tom's boat,as you know it breaks loose getting on plane if you aren't careful, but once on plane it is pretty sweet. I still want you to try Dennis Cavanaugh's new Merc lab 5 blades when he has them ready at Merc Racing. Everybody is fighting for the first few sets,I have your name on a pair.Stay Tuned. :)

TGC-32 &MAGICFLOAT ...Thanks for the info still storms & rain here.Hope to switch the props this week .Always safety first & fun second.Looking forward to the 5 blade merc props.I liked the planing & cruise of the 5 blade hydromotive props but not the speed . Also had less vibration. Thanks Rex
