Head fan......what is the deal?
 
Another minor project. The head fan on my 382 works fine....but pops the circuit breaker under the helm after about 4 minutes of operating. I can reset it..........and it will run for about 4 more minutes.

Weak CB?
Bad fan?

Extra resistance within the motor or on the fan blades will cause the the fan to pull more amps. Extra resistance can be caused by several factors, a motor or fan blades covered with dust, a fan blade dragging, etc. If you have an electrician friend with an amprobe he can tell how many amps the motor is actually pulling, you may find that the breaker may be weak or is actually doing its job.

Or you may want to change your diet :D

I'll stick an ammeter on there and see what's up. I doubt that the fan is dirty.........but maybe there is something dragging on it that came loose. I'll post the results.

Well.....the fan is drawing only about 7.5 amps, and I'm not sure what the push-on / push-off circuit breakers are rated for.....maybe 10A? One thing I did notice is that the fan was not sucking any air at all when it was on.

Anyway, I managed to crawl inside the starboard side thingy.....and take a look. The fan is stiing there all nice and pretty, but with no vent hose attached to it. At first I couldn't see the vent hose at all, but it had slinky'ed down to the bottom nead the head. I managed to grab it and put it back on, but noticed that it had been secured by a tie-wrap. I took the tie-wrap off, and hauled my ass out of there to get something to secure it with. I found some 5200 silicon glue and sqeezed back in there and tack glued it on there.

I forgot to run the fan to see if that made a difference in the CB blowing, but I'll have time this weekend at Catalina Island to try it. :D :D

While you were slinking around in there I think you should have put in a fan-7.5 amps seems way too high for a head fan.

I actually measured about 6.4, but because of the voltage drop through the DMM, I added another amp to it. I stuck the DMM across the fan switch in the head (actually accessed under the counter where the AC is) with the fan running, then turned the switch off allowing all the current to go through the DMM. I could hear a drop in the RPM of the fan due to the voltage drop through the DMM. This fan is pretty good sized and really blows, so I think that around 7amps would be normal.

You could always run the discharge hose to the flame arrestors. Then you'd not only be supercharged, but you'd have methane injection as well...
