The complete 382 thread

I don't think this has been done yet and I think it would be interesting to anyone doing research, I'm starting a thread for each model boat. I'm hoping they will be the complete "guide" to each model. What I'd like to see in it is hard facts about this model only,(length, beam, available power, years produced, numbers produced, colors, pictures, weights, pricing for different years.)

I'd like to keep out the shopping questions. But feel free to put in comments about likes and dislikes, common problems, and results with different power packages. As time permits, I'll troll through old posts and add info collected through the years. If I didn't start a thread for a model you want to see, start one up with the right subject name.

Thanks in advance,
Dave

Likes....styling, room, amenities (gen-set, A/C-Heat, TV/DVD, Stainless Windshield, Stereo, ITS drives).

Dislikes....current prop slip issues and the exhaust is too damn loud for up here. Gotta get those issues resolved.

Overall, nice boat :)

Gorgeous boat, best of luck with the fine tuning

2000 model, 600 hp Innovation/"Volvo" engines, DPX-A drives, A/C, generator, hot/cold water, TV/VCR, bimini top, cockpit carpeting, cockpit and full covers. Added Icom M45 VHF and Garmin GPS 2010C (big 10") chartplotter myself. We usually cruise at 3900-4000 rpm/55-60 mph, and our best speed so far with a full load is 78.7.

Boat's official name is "Me, Too!", but Troutly has dubbed it "The Refrigerator":

Troutly, What kind of mufflers are on yours? I have a set of almost new Corsas I took of my new 382. How is your top speed 76 gps?

Also, Tell me about your slow speed prop slipping. I have the same problem with my 382 with stellings.

Is anybody having any port listing while running with a 382. I have an 03 with 575's and ITS and the boat leans to the left and feels like there is a drag on that side. Also know of another 03 with 575's and no boxes doing the same thing in my boating area. Both our boats are loaded with a gen.,ac, etc. It is a very annoying feeling while cruising along!!! I don't feel this is right, my dealer agrees.

hot water 08-26-2003 03:29 PM

I cruise at about 42-43 MPH at 3500 RPM with drives less then 2 and tabs at 8.5 to keep the bow steady.

TABS AT 8.5, I DIDN'T KNOW FORMULA MADE A SUBMARINE

Just had to harass you a little, good luck with the fine tuning. I'd expect when you are done you will probably be in the eighties

Just remembered when my buddy bought his 2002 382 with 575's and stellings he had a bad prop slip also. He never resolved that issue, he sold the new 575's and put in Teague 800's and dialed in from there

wrinkleface 08-26-2003 06:49 PM

On delivery of my boat earlier this summer it was equipped with 34 pitch four blade labs from Merc and the boat would not even get on plane. Also, the right prop would blow out and not stay hooked up and the RPMs would just fly to the top. The left prop would stay hooked up. The dealer has tried multiple props and turned the boat over to me with 5 blade 29 pitch Hydromotives. We immediately found that even with the 5 blade the right prop would still blow out if the sticks were pushed the least little bit firmly/forward. Does this sound like what you're experiencing? .... Leaving some of the story out, we are currently running 32 pitch four blades and the blow out is much better.

Yep. My 2000 sits almost 1 1/2" lower on the port side. I put it downto the fact that both batteries, the water heater, and the refrigerator are all on that side, with only the rigging and the TV/VCR on the starboard to offset the weight. At one point, I think they were putting the holding tank for the Vacuflush system on the starboard to balance things out. (This I don't have.)

I looked at moving the batteries, but the way Formula wires a boat - no way (too complex). So, I put all my heavy stuff in the right side storage bins and the head. Still have to run about 1/2-point more tab on the por in most cases, though...

My 2001 leans about 1/2" on the port side when docked. I don't notice anything when running.

PhantomChaos 08-26-2003 09:23 PM

Troutly-

I have the 500EFI's and run labbed 28's, and the Stellings boxes. I tried a pair of 30's and it was a DOG out of the hole and also lost top end (about 6-7MPH). Took them right off and went back to the 28's.

ApachePete 08-27-2003 09:38 AM

I don't have any lean on my 1999. No air, no boxes.

As I've posted before, I get the same top speed with either labbed 28's and 30's, but at 5000 RPM Vs 5300.

Cruise is 5 MPH higher with the 30's, so they're what I use. I'm sure that acceleration is faster with the 28's, but that's not important to me.

No trouble with either blowing out: I've heard that Thunderbird used a more conservative X-dimension in '99 than in later years.

I've never had any porpoising.

Fuel load does make a several mile per hour difference (75 empty, 72 full up). Tabs up, Drives at 7.

I've had very good results using Throttle Up in Clearwater, FL to do the lab work. They did a better job for less money than Merc did. You ought to give Matt a call and see what he thinks. He's doing several F-2 race boats, including a Formula, I think.

I find it incredible that T'bird would let a boat out their shop that wasn't spot on. You should call them and get help . . . on their nickel.

Did he even attempt to solve the slip issue with his 575's and Stellings??

The boat was sent to Teague Custom Marine for dial in,
when the boat arrived he sold my buddy on the 800's.

There was a 2003 382 Formula that a dealer was showing around here, it was the same setup as yours, same paint, same motors, same drives etc... The thing that caught my attention with this boat is that they used 5 blade props. I do not know how this boat ran with that setup.

I do know the dealer if you would like to talk with him. But you know those boat salesman :D

Troutly - You are probably going to need Hydramotive 5 blade props to correct your prop slip issues. I insure a 382 that was the test bed for the Merc 5 blades and they were the solution. Call me @ 1-800-530-3357 if you want to discuss.

Seriously............Troutly, do you have the March HOTBOAT magazine issue. If not, I'll send it to you.

John B 08-28-2003 08:43 PM

Troutly,

I have a Formula test on a 383 525 ITS, with 12380 lbs, 31 b1's it ran 75.8 at 5150. That's full gas and two people.

I think with b1 28's and pulling the spacers you should hit 75 light, about 1 or so less than a 382 without all the "accessories".

My 382 slips so bad at low speeds the Corsa sound choice is opening at 25 - 28 mph at 3000. I asked Robt to order a set of Maximus 30's three months ago. Five blades will slow us down maybe 1, and 2-3 more if they are not labbed.

Check your other post, tuning on the rpm issue.

12380 lbs!!!!!!!!! No fat chicks!!!! Geeez!!! Why so heavy John?

Oh.....a 383?

John B 08-28-2003 09:23 PM

383 is a 382 with a/c and Genny. the babe in the bilge! With low water pick-up.

10500 empty-dry, the fat chick with blower= 200, two meat balls= 400, 190 gallons of gas @ 6.2# each=1178, 75 #'s of gear and water for the suction box! = a 12500 lb chick magnet!!!

Smarty

John B 08-29-2003 09:50 AM

Troutly,

I know how you feel. Mine ran 74.5 (3 people & full gas), 79 (1 person & 25 gallons) with Corsas stock. Without Corsas 82 (1 person & 25 gallons). If it's hot and humid subtract 1 or 2 from these numbers. All are GPS readings. Your motors are probably not as sensitive to restricted exhaust as the 525's.

- One more to add to the list - list to port that is -
2003 lite with 575's, XR's with Stellings and Sportmaster lowers, no gen or air etc.
Told dealer at 20 hour checkup and two other times for service - no answer.
Sure is annoying while running, no problem at rest.
I thought it was just me until I read your post - have you had any explanations ?
Also, I have tried the Labed 34's that were delivered on the Boat, 32's, 5 Blade Hydromotives, and 28's on GPS.
34s - results 50mph - 3500rpms
68.5mph - 4500rpms
78.5mph - 5100rpms WOT
5 Blade Hydromotives
49mph - 3500rpms
69.5mph - 4500rpms
77.6mph - 5200rpms WOT
Trim indicators @ 8.5 with Roster

Big Dog (I think I have some of your clothing line - ha)

No resolution yet on the port list. The factory is working with me to get to the root cause of the problem and fix it. Hope their findings with my (R&D boat) will help you and others also. I did expect this boat to be much more dialed in than it proved to be. Prop and planing issues were not what I expected considering my thought that this is probably Formula's most tested hull. (F2 boats)

Hope we're ready to rock and roll for the start of boating season in Northern Michigan next summer.

Wrink

big dog 09-18-2003 08:32 PM

Hey Wrink,
Wish it were my clothing line !
I just happened to speak to the factory today! They mentioned your ( R&D for the Winter ), seems they want to get to the bottom of the problem. In my dealings with Formula, I can't speak more highly of their willingness to solve a problem.
Low 80's, Blue Skies this weekend - Still a bit of rock and roll left here in Georgia.
