353 Fastech How fast ??

I have decided that a 353 Fastech will be the next boat. How fast do they run with the following engines:

HP 500's ??

502 EFI Magnums ??

454 EFI Magnums ??

Also are there any bad issues with 1998 to 2000 models

Thanks

Smitty 09-04-2003 10:18 AM

Thanks Troutly--

I am going to find one with the HP500's, hopefully injected too. Then I plan to Whipplecharge them. My wife wants the nice cabin and stuff and I need to go fast. My current boat goes 75 so the HP 500's will suffice for a while :D :D

Have in our shop right now a 2003 353 with 525 EFI and had on a bay test on gps at 86, has the lighting grafics, the actual hot boat magazine article boat, have also had a 353 with 500 EFIs up to 84 on gps too,

ceich35 09-11-2003 07:45 AM

SHHHH, don't be so loud .................................................. ........................... southern end of the lake, during the LG fun race by the steam ships 86 mph and mattituck LI 84 mph, SHHHH

John B 09-12-2003 10:47 AM

Ciech, Were these boats ITS, Stellings, or stock? I would think the 525 would be 4 mph faster if they didn't have extensions and raised drives.

03 353 with stellings boxes & 525 EFI 87.8 gps with merc lab 33 .also ordered from magicfloat

ceich35 09-13-2003 08:33 AM

John B When I ran the 353 with 500 EFIs I was in salt water in long island, the 353 with 525 EFIs I ran in Fresh water, the densitiy of the waters has effected other stock fastechs we have and have had to work with formula to prop the boats for Lake George.

John B 09-13-2003 02:38 PM

Ceich, What do you think the speed difference is between fresh and salt water on a Fastech? I am doing prop testing on a 382 in fresh but it's going to be used in salt.
Thanks, John

my 1998 353 runs 77 -78 normally best ever was 79 point that 28 labed props no boxes. hp 500's. i have heard that in 2000 formula raised the x dimension 1 inch. if anybody can confirm this i would appreciate the info as i might look into shortened drives. i was in the the st crouix poker run and a guy with a 2000 with 502 mag's damn near ran with me.

Formulafastech
We have not had to change anything for the elevation, but we noticed drastic prop changes esecially on the 271's, stock from the factory we had a unit with a 4b lab 24 pitch prop, and we could not even get to 3/4 throttle before the rev alarm went off, so we had a 292 in stock with lab 28 pitch, tested them and got the max rpm to 5000 rpm, talked with formula and stumped them with our performance, the twin engine boats seem to be ok but still lower on speed and higher on rpm, but it's lake george we can't go fast ANYWAY, lg patrol pointing finger to slow down

Went from 87.8 gps at 5200 rpm to 5350 rpm with rev limiter going off could not really see what it really has . I did see 89 gps.I am going to try a set of 30 six blade herings . I hope to get the slip down and maybe gain 2 or 3 mph. Has any one tried the 6 blade hering yet. And could someone figure both of these slip #for me or what is the formula again. Runnig same props both times .My gear ratio is 1.50. QUOTE] Thanks Rex

The Good Stuff is right. 525's don't like mufflers. If you(and the local authorities) don't mind the sound, there is a decent speed increase. I think John B also had a similar gain.

tesheer 03-30-2004 10:19 AM

Rex,

My calculations have you at 20.15% prop slip running 89 mph @5350 revs with 33" props. If you would like I can e-mail you a simple prop slip calculator I wrote in excel.

tesheer , That would be great.. Thank you for your help. wildthing , That is hauling a$$ in a 35 . Was the boat real stable or was it side to side like it was running out of boat to run on. Rex

wildthing357 03-31-2004 03:53 AM

THE GOOD STUFF,
It was pretty stable, no chime walking. After about 85 the boat was airing out real nice. He is going to try some new 5 blades then maybe some 6 blades and did more head work. This year it should really scream.

baja27 04-02-2004 07:26 AM

My budies 353 runs around 75-77 he does not have extension boxes .Also it's a 98 with carb 500's

Dean Ferry 04-23-2004 07:44 AM

Can anyone confirm the 2000 year X-dimension up 1"
Really curious!
Thanks,

just got a 2002 353 with 500efi no boxes and xz drives from nelems marine in AL about 3 weeks ago finally opened her up this weaken hit 78 with 8 people on board at 4800 rpm so she probably do 83 82 with just me and my son on it .

Fastest one we ever had: 2003 w/525's and boxes, 90.6 on GPS (one of the Formula factory guys was with me, so this is verifiable!). That was after a LOT of prop testing using custom wheels from our F-2 boat.

Donzilla's 2003 with 500's and no boxes is running pretty good also. Perhaps he can elaborate!

Re: 353 Fastech How fast ??

Also, you can't accurately project slip factor unless you have an actual scan of your propellers. Merc props in reality scan at at least 1 or 2 inches LESS than what they are marked. Hydromotives tend to scan at much closer to their actual sizing. Your slip should ideally be in the 12% range or so from what the prop actually scans at. If you get your slip this low, then you are running VERY efficiently.

85.4 Radar in a Powerboat Magazine test. 525 EFI's

A terrific boat in every way shape and form. Would the Porter's allow deletion of the Silent Thunder platform and Just install Livorsi Muffler tips? I would put an aluminum Cigarette style platform on if I wanted to myself. Possible?

I prefer the older looking Formulas simply because of the platform. No other reason. I am totally happy with this boat except for that one issue. Same with the 38'.

Afton - I have a 2003 353 with 500's, no boxes, and xz drives. Best mph to date 82.4 with 2 on board and a 1/2 load of fuel. This was done turning 30's inward @ 5200 rpm.

2002, 496 HO's...70.5 @4700 w/ stock non-labbed Bravo 28's. 72 MPH @ 5000 w/stock polished 26's. Labbed 28's no doubt the ticket to 74 MPH, though the 26's work very nice overall! :) Randy
