Tried Q5 Hydromotives on 382
Compared to labbed B1's: Stock Q5's, with 3 inches less pitch, speed down 1, rpm down 200. Slip cut in half, from 21% to 11%. All readings are gps and digital tacks. Tests with same weight, same place, same day, back to back. This ones for Troutly.
Your welcome, thank you, John B PS, labbing should make Q5's better than B1 labs. |
Hey John, are you that dude with the sloop that the Beach Boys sing about?:p

Have not heard of anyone who tried the Hydromotives, after talking to Hydromotive, who was not pleased with the outcome. What advantage are you personally seeing with spinning them in, and does it affect the "docking" manuvering of the boat?
|
Props in both cases were spinning out. I have to back into a boathouse, and spinning out would cause too much hull damage, because the boat will crab sideways badly with one in reverse.
The best part for us is the higher speeds at the same rpm in the lower speed range: Minimum planning speed (light load) B1Lab= 22mph with full down tabs @ 2200. Q5 stock 18mph @ 18mph. Tabs & trim level @ 3000rpm; Q5 = 43, B1 = 36 This works much better with the HP sound choice which opens at 3000rpm and won't close above 2700rpm. John B |
Mr.Troutly,
The 29's on loan for test or are they for sale.I'm currently able to turn 5300 + with 28 lab b1S and seems for me the 29's could be just what I need.29 Hydros do not work for me. |
Troutly, Your running weight is probably over 12200lbs. Try this formula http://go-fast.com/boat_speed_predictions.htm . Your shaft horsepower is maybe 920 or less (with those ****ty mufflers), weight 12100+-, with a factor of maybe 260 (maybe lower with the extra 1/2" spacer). This gets you to maybe 71 mph.
Now pop in 11000 lbs and you should hit 74 +-. Did you gain any speed with the 29's? |
Troutly, Tom at Hydromotive, an old friend and the owner, told me Wednesday that Formula has recently bought a bunch of Q 5's from him. The Q5's are so much better than the B1's on the 382, I wouldn't be surprised if they aren't going to use them on the new 382's. Robert should check this out for you, they may swap a pair for your 30's. You would probably want 25's or 26's, call Tom for recommendations, he hit mine right on the money.

Troutly, BTW the B1's are 31 pitch and the Q5's are 28's. 82 @ 5350 = B1 & 81 @ 5150 = Q5.

I have been a little out of pocket with a minor health problem. Whatever you guys need can be billed to me and we can work out the details later. Hope to be back at work in a few days. I'm sure Darryl Johnson will take care of you in my absence. Sorry for the inconvenience. Robert

Magic,
