Love that Formula company
I just got off the phone with Bob at the Formula Tech line. They must have the best records in the world. My mechanical trim indicators have been sticky for three years now and I've been forcing some WD40 in the cables which has only been a temporary fix. So while the engines are out , I figured I'll change my cables.
Well , what I wanted to do is have my new ones ready and just fasten them to the old one and pull them through as I remove the old ones. Problem is I didn't know what size or thread type the Morse cables were. Gave Bob my HIN # and he popped off 33c style one 17' and the other 20'. Formulas tech support is GREAT:cool: ;) :) I've used them other times to get answers and it's always the same great service , and my boats an '89:eek: |
That's good they were able to help you. Do you have twin's with trim tabs, with the 4 indicator slides? If so, you probably won't be as happy doing the job as you are now. That panel was a pain to work with when I changed 2 of 4 cables last year. Maybe if you are doing all the cables at the same time it could be easier. They could have designed it better IMO.

Yeah, I know it's a PIA. I had mine apart last year to repaint it from black to white since I changed to white guages and white panels. Had to have this match too , and just coulldn't see buying a new one when it was so easy to paint

They've been helpful since my first Formula, a 242/twin small blocks which I purchased in 93'.

mopowers dash
That looks to be a real nice dash job you did there Mo,do you have any other bigger picks to show the complete dash with your wheel too? Just wondered not to big a deal if you don't. I also have plans on doing something similar to what you have there. Nice job again, keep up the good work on your Formula, gotta love those old Birds. Propwash

Mopower
Hey Mopower, thanks for your trouble to show me those picks that looks great! This gives me some idea of what I was thinking and how it would look. How or what did you use to paint those panels or are they new? Did you put those gages in your self and did ever thing plug right together or did you have to buy some special electrical pig tails, splicing, etc. Thanks again Propwash.
|
Prop,
The panels were new. The original VDO guages had push on spade type connectors and the new Farias had studs and nuts. I was able to get 90* adapters that went over the studs so I could simply plug in the original wiring. Also added water pressure , fuel pressure , and oil temp. All that wiring was new. The white panels certainly brightened up the dash area and the illuminated trim and tab switches were a help after dark;) |
Mo's White Dash
Hey Mo, do you happen to have the name of the company on your dash work and a phone no. for a contact? Thanks Prop.
|
What is your setup for water pressure? Sender and gauge package? Do you have a dump valve and thru-hull fitting?
|
Jay,
The water pressure is a mechanical pressure guage with a tube like a speedo. I drilled and tapped a hole in the t-stat housing right by were the water comes in from the oil cooler. I'm also running Johnson crank mounted pumps in lieu of the Merc belt driven ones since they are almost impossible to get to in my 272 with BBs. |
Propwash,
You've got mail |
Mo, it is really looking good. Were you able to get the dash panels from Formula? Any problems using the stock "senders" from the original VDO guages with your new units. I'm starting to have a couple that occasionally "fritz" around a little then go back to working, probably a ground. But I would also like to change guages. Russ

FO,
You have mail |
Mopower- Also interested in where you were able to get the new dash panels.
Thanks |
Powerguy,
You've got mail:) |
Mo's White Dash
Hey, Mo you been a busy man with all those P.M.'s. I just want to say thank-you very much, I took down all the information and will be sure to call Mark when I am ready for that next project. Thanks Prop.
