What to do??

I took delivery of my new to me 01' 382 last thursday. The boat was said to be equipped with Ext. Boxes, but when it showed up, no boxes. I immediately contacted the salesman and told him of the problem and he said we would work something out.

NOW...

Would you request that boxes be installed on the boat, take monetary compensation for the boxes, or send the boat back??

To have the boxes installed it will cost 12k approximately. I feel like I paid for a boat with boxes so they should get me a set of boxes. On the flip side, 12k is a lot of money to ask for on something like this. Any tips, opinions, advice will be GREATLY appreciated.

WOW....I would say that they owe you some boxes installed, or return the boat. What if it had 454's too. What would you want to do then.......

lonestar382 02-23-2004 03:22 PM

Very good point. It would be one thing if it was missing a swim ladder of something that a couple hundred bucks would fix, but 12k isn't something to joke about. I am dealing with the owner of the place now, so it looks like everything is being taken care of...I hope anyways.

I had the boat out this weekend WOW!!! I really love the way this boat handles. I wish there would have been some chop, on sticky glass water, I could only muster up about 71 on GPS. I'm hoping with NEW boxes, and some chop to be around 75.

Just curious are the boxes on your build sheet and if so sounds like a factory problem that I am sure will be addressed and rectified. I recently purchased a 353 and asked when we would sign the paper work and was told not until delivery and inspection! This week I hope to see it delivered. This is my second new Formula in 2 yrs. and the support I received brought me home again.
Good luck with the new boat and keep us up to date.

But, on the flip side.....I would also have done a bit more research on the boat to start with. At a bare minimum LOTS of pictures. More likely I would have tried to have someone close by go look at it and then have a survey done on it if I wanted to close the deal.

Anyway, that is all water under the bridge. I assume you are dealing with Bill now. I think he will come through for you.

:)

I think that's why they say hind sight is 20/20:rolleyes:

This was my first boat purchase over a long distance internet deal, and I am learning some lessons...the hard way of course.

The problem was dealing with a place this size, they had at one time 3 nearly identical boats. Problem was with whomever listed it on the internet. They got confused and listed that this boat had boxes when it was actually an identical 353 next to it that had the boxes.

I think in the long run, all will be well, just getting through this learning curve. (Not doing to bad for only being 21yrs old;) )

Thanks for the advice, and Troutly, let me know how you are fairing with your prop testing, as soon as it gets warm for good here I am going to start digging in to the details to try and really dial the boat in.

Lonestar382,

Sorry to hear about your problem. Had NO IDEA you were only 21! I couldn't afford my 311 until I was 32 and the 382 at 42. You should be very proud of your accomplishments! Either way you resolve this, you will still really enjoy this boat. You might want to consult an attorney about this. Just be sure to get everything in writing from them first! I am partial to boxes only because I have them on my Poker Run Special. I have another friend (WAGS382) in Cleveland that just bought a 382 without them ... it will be interesting to see if there is a difference in the handling, etc. between the two boats this summer. I live in Toledo (about two hours from Cleveland). Let me know if I can help with your problem in any way. Feel free to stop by if you need a place to rest on any trips back/forth to National.

Rather than tear a perfectly good boat to pieces for the sake of a few mph, I'd ask for a financial settlement. If you bought the boat for 2/3 of it's original price, I'd ask for 2/3 of the $12k ($8k) price of the boxes and negotiate from there.

I'd also benchmark what you paid for the boat versus what boats of similar age with similar options are going for. Magicfloat (Bob Nelems) at Nelems Marine in Alabama would be an excellent source of unbiased information. You may find that the boat was priced right for what it was equipped with, and that the listing of the boxes was simply a screwup. On the other hand, if the boxes were crucial to your choice, then you may want to play it a little tougher and maybe push for the identical one that really does have them. (Was there a price difference between the two boats?)

Welcome to the 382 club. It's all good. Just be careful out there, and excercise good judgement and safety practices.

Congratulations on the new boat. I had a similar experience when I was in search of my next boat. It was almost an internet transaction but when I asked for them to fax me a spec sheet some of the items listed on the internet add were not there. When I followed up they stated it was an error on the internet and the options were not actually on this particular boat but another they had in stock. As others have said you are very fortunate to be able to purchase such a nice boat at such a young age. I just purchased mine in 11/02 and can't wait for the weather to break.

lonestar382 02-24-2004 08:38 AM

Thanks for the words of encouragement. I am going to push to have a set of new boxes installed since that was what I really wanted. I have heard that the boxes enhance the performance of this hull quite a bit. I will keep everyone posted on my dealings, and hopefully all turns out well.

Thanks again!
Corey

Things are looking up, it looks like they are gioing to come pick the boat up and take it back to Ohio and put some new boxes on. That is stepping up to the plate in my mind!!

Everyone I have dealt with up there has absolutely been first class and wonderful to deal with.

Lonestar 382,
Congratulations on your new purchase. As RedDog stated, I am also a new member to the 382 club and waiting for the water to thin out up here in Ohio. I looked at your boat in the Cedar Point boat show last summer, very nice. Please do us a favor and take good notes on the performance before and after the boxes, rpm vs mph in several increments using gps speed. I have noticed that several 382 owners complain of excessive prop slip. We won't hit the water until may up here, but I will give my input as soon as I can. I will be experimenting with props this summer also. Jeff

You bet, I am hoping to have the boat in the water for some time this weekend to do some last minute testing before it gets re-winterized and sent back to National Marine.

So far on glassy water 65 degrees, 28P Bravo 1's. I have seen 72 at 4850-4900rpm. Those are just preliminary numbers, but I will try to get some recorded numbers this weekend to compare to the after boxes intall. I met with my salesman in person today about this mishap, and they are accepting full responsibility and have agreed to install a new set of Stellings extension boxes and do some touchup on the paint where there was a fuel spill.

Like I said before, the folks at National Marine are a class act, and I would definitely recommend them to any of my friends.

Now I guess I am going to have to start from scratch with some prop testing to dial this boat in after the boxes are installed.

RedDog382 02-24-2004 11:38 PM

Corey,

Glad to hear this looks to be working out for you! I might be interested in your 28 Bravo's if you end up running something else in the end of all this. I would like a nice clean used pair to send for labbing ... I think labbed 28's will put me somewhere in the upper 80's. Let me know if you want to sell them later.

Chris

lonestar382 02-25-2004 04:32 PM

Hey Chris I'll definitely keep that in mind.
The boat will be going back in the next week or so, and it'll probably be there at least 2 weeks. I'm sure I'll have it in the water instantly after it returns so I should definitely have an idea in 3 to 4 weeks of what I'll need/do.

Troutly, thanks for the tip, I think part of my problem was the water was absolutely glass. I think if I can get it out in a little bit of chop it should free up the hull some and probably yield some better numbers.

Corey

Yeah....and if there is a current, go along with the current too. :D It will make your GPS speed faster! :D :D (really)
