Search over - New to me 1993 Formula 336
Yes, my search is over - and ended where it began. Just bought a 1993 336 that is a one owner bought new locally and serviced by local marina. Fresh water boat with 238 hours, 454 mag's, and all the options. Includes an immaculate steel 3 axle trailer that only gets wet twice per year. I have been actively pursuing this boat for over a month and the owner finally committed to sell. A coat of wax, new bow nav light, and a new cd player with remote and the boat is ready to go.
Thanks to all on the board for giving me your advice and thoughts on purchasing a 336 Formula. This will definitely be a change from my old boat, a 27 Fountain. |

Thanks. Lake Champlain still frozen solid. My marine opens May 1st if the water is not too high.

I have a 303 and I love it. (Was gonna sell it for a smaller single-engine boat, but decided to keep her) Are you going to run lake Champlain with it? I always wanted to try that lake. Best of luck to you. Toolman (Dave) |

Yes, I live a mile from Lake Champlain and can actually see my boat at the marina from my house. The 336 should be much a smoother ride than my 27 Fountain. I believe that it is the only 336 on the lake. |
Hey Powerguy. Nice looking boat. I like the colors. I bought mine off of Champlain about 7 months ago up near Burlington from a guy named Dan St. Hilaire. Champlain is beautiful! Congratulations.

I know your boat well an know all three owners. Peter Trono was the first owner, Dave Wulfson was the second and Dan was the third. The first two guys both had it for a while. Dan had it for 1 season. That boat screams for one so big. Were you able to tighten down the hull to reduce the flex in the boat? |
Powerguy That's awesome. Small world. I didn't know the first two owners just Dan really. I haven't done anything to try to reduce the flex yet. Had you been in the boat and noticed the deck flex or was that from the previous thread? Right now I'm just getting things straigtened out. The carpet was trashed so I am pulling all of it out and recovering the seats below in grey vinyl. The shore power, water system and several little buttons, gauges, etc. are shot so that's my next project. I also ended up spending about $700 on one of the outdrives. The other was like new. All in all I was happy with the deal and expecting to put work into it for the price. And, yes, for a boat that big it really does fly.
Once I get that worked out my plan is to replace the rub rail with a white one and while doing that I've heard that you can really tighten them up by either thru bolting the hull to deck screws or remove the screws, epoxy them and replace and tighten them. A couple of people on OSO have said that makes a major differrence. I'm also going to remove that ugly wooden swim platform and go with a tubular unit from Extreme Marine. But, not until I get the other bugs worked out. Do you also know Peter Pizzagalli (the guiy who built the engines)? Brent Ford |
Yes, I do. He is in Afghanistan right now. He builds a lot of performance motors in the Burlington area and has a great reputation. His big block motors are solid.
I have not been in your boat in 10+ years. A friend of mine rode in it last year and mentioned the flex. Sounds like you can make the repairs you mentioned and remove the flex. Have fun . Dave |

So, when you wer in it 10 years ago it wasn't that fast then right? Those blowers and the engine rebuilds were supposedly done 1999. In 1995 Pizzagalli did some engine work but nothing major until 1999. At least that was the info I got from Peter and I did have a couple of receipts from him so I thought it was legit. I'd sure hate to think that those engine rebuilds are 10 years old. There are two engine hour gauges in the engine compartment (separate from the boat hour gauge) that read 81 hours. Plus the compression was good. Do you recall if the blowers were on it when you were in it that long ago? (It really doesn't matter at this point but I am curious.) |
When I was on the boat it had stock 454's and was a real dog because of the weight. Dave Wulfson had Peter rebuild the motors and add the blowers. Peter is known for building strong blower motors. The late 90's sounds right for that. I didn't see Wulfson out in it much so I would believe the 81 hours on the blowers.

Thanks Dave - That is reassuring. I knew I had other work cut out for me on that boat so I sure didn't want to worry about the engines. I checked around about Pizzagalli and he certainly has a great reputation as an engine builder.

Thanks Wrink - I think that the previous owner was more anal that I am. He rarely used the boat as is indicated by 238 hours in 10 years. Even the throttles are perfect with no paint worn off them. I need to replace the bow light ( broken), install a cd player and possible replace the steering wheel with a new momo in purple or silver. Other than that a good wax and it's ready to burn gas.

I don't think I have my copy anymore, but Powerboat magazine did a test on a blown 336. You might enjoy reading it if you can find someone who has old copies of the mag.
