removing black strip
1 Attachment(s)
has anyone tried or have you removed the strip of black that goes around the back of the boat! I think it would look much better white!

I take it the black "strip" you are talking about is the black graphic above the rub rail, right?
SR1 models used imron paint for this graphic, the smaller 206's, 223's and 242's used vinyl graphics (at least most did, some were painted). In any event, if you remove the black, you will invariably see a shadow where the white has darkened over the years. The white under the graphic will be relatively virgin compared to the surrounding white. Then, you'd have to do a lot, and I mean a lot, of buffing to get the surrounding white up to snuff. Actually, you'd probably have to wet sand it to get it right. That is just tons of work. I've considered what you suggested about getting rid of the black. But, I only consider it for like 15 seconds or so before I return to reality. The black is staying on mine. |
To get over the fade issue, you could sand the black, and repaint it any color you wish.

I don't know if it's the same, but I'm taking off the black strip that surrounds the cockpit on this 81. It is vinyl. It came off fairly easily and it isn't much different under it as what is around it.

In this picture you can see where I have it removed around the bow and it's still on next to the helm.

If his 206 is like my 206, the black stripe is vinyl.
I thought the same about gel coat color difference too. It'll look brite white compared to the rest. |
Mine wasn't that different under the stripe, but the deck is kind of an off white to begin with, not a bright white.

I didn't like all the black either so I cheated. I used tape and broke the black up that way. I don't have a good picture but will get one asap and post it. It isn't as clean a look as if it were all white, but it's a hell of a lot better than all that black. I broke it up using both white and teal tape. Came out pretty good. It really minimized the "black". Plus I have a couple of decals back there to further draw attention away from the black, including the famous OFFSHOREONLY.COM decal.

I believe that is Imron paint on that boat, and agree with Thirdbird that it'll be a job to remove it, and get it to match. I would considering either painting over it, or just add color to it and break it up so the black portion is not so dominating.
