Hole in the dash . . .
 

I have an '89 sr-1 and I am going to install a Garmin 176c. I need to put 4 holes in the top af my dash to the outside of the compass. As easily as this wonderfully black gel-coat scratches, I was wondering if I needed to be extra careful when I go for it. I am using a right-angle drill and some good bits, but I can't get a ton of speed out of the drill (its a 12V DeWalt cordless). Anyone have experience here?

Before you drill think about using the "industrial strength" velcro. I used to to mount bracket and display for 7" Simrad GPS/Depth Sounder. The stuff holds rock sold and no drilling---

this is rambunctious (1988 272)

i used velcro too. didn't want to drill into my formula. works great, has never pulled off. I also mounted the remote antennae using velcro too. when the nieces bump it, it tips over, and i restick it, . and if i sell the boat. no holes anywhere if i keep my electronics.

Velcro - that's a great idea. I am planning to install a GPS too, and I hadn't thought of that. Actually a friend in the Navy told me that they wouldn't allow Velcro on ships, because that over time the vibrations on the ship would cause the strips to mesh together so well they couldn't get it apart!

If the compass is at all important to you , don't mount any eletronics too close because it can throw the reading off. Velcro offer the opportunity to move it if this happens :)

And the compass SHOULD be important to you. :)
