1000 Islands Formula Cruise

A few of us "Up Staters" talked last year about a little Formula cruise from A-Bay to Kingston and back. Maybe lunch and and a few brews at the LoneStar in Kingston.

Lets see some responses from any Formula owners who cruise the Islands. Be real fun to get 10-15 "Birds" together for a little run. I've got three owners from down near Syracuse interested.

I'm in ogdensburg and am interested.. which weekend you looking at?

Re: 1000 Islands Formula Cruise

I'm in Watertown (boat's in the Bay) have perhaps 2-3 other Birds who would be interested! I work every other weekend...so I'm crossing my fingers whoever...picks the right one! Perhaps later this season we could hook up for a little tour of the southern shore there ThirdBird? I've never been to Sandy Pond, though I have run a buddy's boat up to the Bay from Oswego for him. I remember talking about all this last winter, thanks for bringing the idea back!

Thirdbird, sounds like fun, Lets go, expect to pick up my (new to me Formula) this Friday after 2nd sea trial. I also use my boat out of Sandy Pond and I am excited to cruise. By the way, early reports say weather will be cool this weekend, let me know if you guys are off to Oneida Lake this weekend.

Re: 1000 Islands Formula Cruise

Welcome to the board Diver!!!!!!!!! You talk like you don't know me!!!!!!! (I've know this guy since we were 12 years old for Pete's sake!!)

For all the rest of you, Diver just bought a '90 242. Nice boat, rare Nassau colors. Diver and I checked it out last Saturday. Always nice to a have a new Formula member.

As for the cruise date, I'm open. It'll be nice to see everyone's hardware. I guess we should just start throwing out dates and see who can make it. I'll throw the first date out there,,,,, how about July 17th?? We should do a Saturday in case we "need" to stay over night. July would be nice, it's our best bet for nice weather. I usually launch at Keewaden (sp?) state park. We could all meet at the village dock in A-Bay at say 9:30-10:00?

Does anyone know if the Lone Star in Kingston has it's own docks. If not, we can pull into Confederation Basin. There's usually lots of space. Anyway, throw some other dates out there if that doesn't work.

Rippem, come on down to the "Pond" anytime. Nice beaches, we could cruise to Oswego for some cocktails!! Love to see your boat. Henderson has a nice launch and it's a pretty nice ride from there. You could put in at the pond but the ramp I use isn't the best. Adequate, just not the best. Let me know.

Dave

Re: 1000 Islands Formula Cruise

ThirdBird, the 17th is our TIPBC Poker Run. Kingston day-docks definitely full midday. The weekend after sounds good...the 24th? Or the weekend after that(the 31st...my lady could make it then, even better) I'm off both these weekends. A little more lead time for everyone else also. No Lone Star docks, the day docks in the left harbor from Confederation basin are where we'll be for transient dockage. Copy of birth cert for all aboard a good idea, and all other ducks in a row. Keep in mind also, no open containers in Canadian waters. I know someone who got reminded of that to the tune of $170 U.S. last weekend! I keep my boat in the boathouse at Hutchinson's in Alex Bay. Been there since the late 80's...(did someone say 80's? ). Yes, definitely want to do the Pond, and get to Oswego again...possibly overnight at one or the other. would be great to get the heads-up from a "local" for that trip. :)

Re: 1000 Islands Formula Cruise

Rippem,
July 24th is the big fireworks at Harborfest in Oswego. I'll be over there all day Saturday. Air show on Sunday out in front of the harbor so I'll be there for that too. Weekend after that sounds good for A-Bay (31st). If you've never been to Harborfest by boat for the fireworks, you really ought to try it. We do it every year, it's that good. Usually cruise back to the pond after that. Nice cruise at night. Gotta be carefull but it's a fun and a challange, especially if its snotty out!!!! We've been caught in some real nastys out there. It hones your seamanship skills :drink: If you'd like to hook for that we can arrange it. Usually ride over about noon, check out the sights by boat. Tons of real nice hardware there. More boats than you'll see almost anyplace. The first mate viewing is real nice too. Sometimes we find a spot to dock or anchor off then go up and walk the town a bit. Later, we raft up in a calm spot for the fireworks show. It's incredible viewing from the water.

You can make Harborfest as party-crazy or subdued as you like, it's all there.

Thanks for the heads up on Canadian regs and whatnot. Julie and I are pretty up on that stuff because we cruise to Canada quite a bit. Good for others to be aware of though. Birth certificates are a good idea.

Re: 1000 Islands Formula Cruise

Harborfest may be a good time to come down that way. I work with a couple blowboaters (good guys...I've even been sailing w/them for several days up into the Bay of Quinte) that always do harborfest, and have a buddy with a mooring there. They go back and forth to shore in the dingys. They've invited me to "motorboat" on down many times and get on the raft off his mooring. I don't know...we'll see. The 31st sounds like it's the date for the Formula Rondezvous :D ...confirm, and we'll spread the word both here and each locally to other Formula Family members. Post if that is the definitive date...There are a couple of Formula owners over Lake George way that may be interested in coming over and doing some running without the hassles they have over there. :eureka:

Re: 1000 Islands Formula Cruise

That sounds like a great plan to me. I can make the 31st. No conflicts, and would be willing to fire up the Smoothie machine back at Hutchinson's after we return.. Maybe some of the other Formula owners would be interested in spending the night at the Riveredge docks (close to Rippem and I) so we can continue the party late into the AM?!?!

Hope this sounds good to all? Look forward to it!

Dave

Dave (axapowell), I'll have to mention to the "little guy" that it's a FORMULA get together and he can't go... :D :D

Update: my lady is bummed as the 31st does not work for her. Though I will be there regardless. I just can't miss the first annual 1000 Islands FORMULA RONDEZVOUS

I hope you got my voice mail regarding the Formula Website. I think thats pretty cool that they posted your correspondence and your photo under vintage Formulas. I didn't know if you knew that. The also posted a duplicate under Owners stories. I also sent Chris an email asking him to keep me posted on any updates for Friday.

Diver,
Yeah, I got the Formula newsletter with the picture and article but thanks for the heads up. You getting psyched about Friday yet :D

As for the get-together on the 31st, It's good on my end. Axepowell, smoothies at the dock sounds good to me. By the way, I totally forgot about the stereo remote I was going to order from you until I got on my boat this year and remembered mine was junked. Is the offer still good?

Rippem, tell the better half she must not miss this, it's imprtant stuff :drink:
What could she possible be doing that's more important than a Formula rondezvous????? What are the "hassels" you were speaking of at Lake George? I've been considering a trip out there for a cruise. Not a good place to go or what?

Rippem 06-23-2004 07:59 AM

Re: 1000 Islands Formula Cruise

Do a search in general about LG...it's unreal. Not everybody gets hassled, but the lake water patrol are real tools from what I read...check it out. Not performance boat-friendly. :blaster: My lady has higher education committments that CANNOT be put aside, unfortunately. :( Though I do consider meeting other FORMULA owners a form of higher education... :D

TTT for interested parties. Weather permitting, this will be a fantastic time! Easy route, good water, and some of the most beautiful boating in the East. What about you LG Formula folks? If you haven't been boating in the 1000 Islands over here...you don't know what you're missing!

Re: 1000 Islands Formula Cruise

Rippem,
We should cruise from A-Bay down the American side, cut across the Wolf Island Cut then on to Kingston. On the way back we'll take the Canadian channel. Nice ride along that side. Goes by Gananoque (sp?). Maybe if it's early, we could stop into Lake of the Isles for a short raft up and view the sights, if you know what I mean. ;)

Just a suggestion for a nice route to take.

Rippem 06-30-2004 08:21 PM

Re: 1000 Islands Formula Cruise

Sounds good. :) If the wind is reasonable (I'm in, even if it's not :D ), fuel load and participating boat sizes allow, leaving K-Town and coming around the end of Wolf Island to the Cape would be  . Run down the back side of Carlton, then cross over at the Cut again for the Canadian channel route back. This would be a nice figure "8" route for the day, with no repetition. We'll play it by ear, dependent on the factors mentioned above. I spend a fair bit of time in the Eastern Lake, and we all know the River quite well. ;) We'll take a couple of shortcuts here and there. :D

ThirdBird 07-01-2004 05:51 AM

Re: 1000 Islands Formula Cruise

Roger that on the short cuts, there's some cool little channels that are real nice,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,if,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, ,you know where you're going. I'm sure you know how dangerous to underwater rotating equipment some of those areas can be!!!!!!!

It'll be fun man, maybe we can show each other some new stuff :)

Also, I agree on playing the wind for the sake of the smaller boats. Some of those stretches can be a bit bumpy. The Forty Acres north of Wolfe Island comes to mind. As for me, I'll run anything :D :D

So, does this mean we have to hang out with the little guy the 31st? ThirdBird, were you in the pond last Sat? Saw two Formulas tied together in there. And Rip, don't you worry we be takin' good care of Nurse Ratchet here in Syr, she's a good learner. Very psyched for slip 27. We have a slip for Thurs - Mon at the International Marina for Harborfest. We welcome evening visitors and spend the days at the pond or Lakeview. Axa, how was the snooty BCC outing?

axapowell 07-09-2004 07:57 AM

Re: 1000 Islands Formula Cruise

I'll have to check the rules and see if we would allow a Donzi to join us on the 31st. Shouldn't be to much of a problem though. Looking forward to the additional company in the boathouse the month of August. I've got a feeling that you may like it so much, you will try to convince them into letting you keep it for next year!

We finished 4th overall. A stupid chip and a bogey cost us a tie for second. Oh well...tough greens. Reminded me of Taylors Tiny town. I'll give you the details later. We made the dinner cruise on the 24th, so Harbor Fest is off for us. Will miss it, but not a bad thing either.

Later
Dave

Ragged,

How have you been? Rumour has it we'll be neighbors soon. They'll let just about anyone in that boathouse won't they? Hell, they keep renewing Rip and Axa so the bar ain't set real high. . Very happy with the new ride, even though it's not officially sanctioned for Formula cruise events. What'd you end up with, a 35?

Re: 1000 Islands Formula Cruise

ThirdBird (who's idea this was originally) has been kind enough to go along with Saturday August 7th as the new date for this run to Kingston. Any FORMULA owners who object to the date change...speak now or it's cast in stone. Nurse Ratchet will be able to make this date, one of the very few. Yes, 5P, it's obvious to me now...that the bar continues to descend with your arrival! :D I'll have to look into where the hell slip 27 is anyway, while I still have the time and the spraypaint to make sure it's out by the gasdock. ;) At least you have your own membership now... Maybe Kitty will participate in certian forums...I wont say a word.

Actually Ragged, he left and founded Donzi in '63.

Re: 1000 Islands Formula Cruise

Saturday I was one of two boats on the Lake side with a beat up old fishing trawler, a little choppy, but I've got a big anchor. Sunday, I was on the lake side from noon to 5pm. I'm in a 28ZX Donzi, yellow, orange, with a waving checkered flag design aft. Another way to find us is we have a black and white Border Collie with us constantly chasing a yellow frisbee. Saw a group of at least three formulas, two were newer with the same graphics, one looked 30' and the other might have been 24', and there was one older Formula looked about 30' also. I've met the owner of the '92- '93 with the teal black and pink graphics that's usually inside the pond. Last year I was in a 24' checkmate, After Fore Play on the windscreen.

ThirdBird 07-12-2004 03:34 PM

Re: 1000 Islands Formula Cruise

5PM,
Mine is teal/pink/black (Palm Beach). But, it's an '89, not a 92-93. Maybe it was me you chatted with last year. Lets hook up at the beach. I'll be looking for your Donzi.

5PMSMWHR 07-13-2004 06:29 PM

Re: 1000 Islands Formula Cruise

third,

yeah, we talked last year in the pond. your boat is very similar to Axa's, just a few years older. It'd be nice to get Axa and Rip to the pond, Rip's got a really nice pair of docking lights on his 35 that would be a hit in the pond.
