Formula Virgin!!!
 

Hi all,

Ive just put a down payment on a 1990 Formula 242 SS with a single 7.4 Mercruiser & Bravo 1 leg.

These boats are quite rare in the UK and i have had a hell of a time tracking one down.

The boat has been on Lake Windermere from new but will now be coming down to me on the Solent, the home of the Classic "Cowes-Torquay-Cowes" Race.

Could anyone give me some pointers as to what problems i should look out for with this boat before finally parting with my hard earned dosh.

Problems? Hummmm, well, your other responsibilities will get neglected because of all the time you'll spend with your boat. And fuel is kind of expensive. Can't think of much more.

Really, the 242 is a GREAT Formula. The factory tried to discontinue it for three years as they wanted to make bigger models, but the dealers and customers would not let them. It was too popular.

But, it is a 14 year old boat, and there are problems that occur, mostly in the engine/drive train, but that happens in all makes and models. Get it surveyed and have a mechanic inspect it.

There was a similar thread a month ago with someone looking for a 311. Lots of good advice given in that thread. And also about 6 months ago with someone looking for a 242. Look those up, follow the advice, and you should be in good shape.

BTW, the 242 is a great boat.
