89 242 SS - What's behind the door?
Hey, just brought my 242 home yesterday, unfortunately the weather is supposed to be crap for the next week so she may be staying on the trailer for awhile.
Near the front on the port side of the cockpit, in front of the "shotgun" seat, is a smoke colored plastic door that unlocks with a "circle" key. It's identical to the door on the starboard side under the dash where my VHF is sitting right now. I didn't get a key for this and apparently it must have been lost for awhile because there are some gouge marks around the keyhole like somebody was trying to coax it open. What's behind that door? On my 89 242 LS, the door is only on the starboard side.

Do you have a door or switchpanel or ? on the port side of your boat, inside the cuddy and probably very close to the bulkhead? Does it have a "circle key" lock on it? Thanks! Aaron |

OR if you have tripple A or even if not a lock smith will come over there and make you a new key for ussually about 50 bucks or so.

Re: 89 242 SS - What's behind the door?
Actually, I have considered trying the ol' Bic pen trick on it, next time it stops raining long enough for me to take off the mooring and cockpit covers.
http://www.wired.com/news/culture/0,1284,64987,00.html If that doesn't work and I got desparate enough to use one of your suggested tools, I find that slapping a metal cutting blade into the Sawzall will make short work of just about anything. Or maybe I'll call the locksmith over and have him make a couple keys for my coin-op pool table while he's here. But WHAT IS BEHIND THAT DOOR??? If it's nothing, I'll just leave it locked. Aaron |

Re: 89 242 SS - What's behind the door?
I've got an SR357--it has a similar panel with that same "soda pop" machine type lock. On mine it gives access to the 12VDC and 120VAC wiring panels--
Would also suggest calling Formula Tech Support--they may beable to give you some ideas that a locksmith could use to open the lock without trashing that panel Poorsche www.boatmat.com |
Re: 89 242 SS - What's behind the door?
It's just storage access, there is nothing in there. Open the large sliding panel in the aft and you can look all the way up to the cabin bulkhead right past that door.

You can call Formula and order a key for that door.
I think they cost ~$5. I needed to get into mine to change out the speakers. Ray |
Re: 89 242 SS - What's behind the door?
If it helps...I just got mine from Formula. The item number/location is 0268 01A07 and the description reads, Latch compression "Key" E3-5-15.

Aaron Get in touch with Robert at Nelems Marine, aka Magicfloat here on Oso. I'm sure he will order it for you, and probably have it shipped straight to you. Good guy. |
Re: 89 242 SS - What's behind the door?
You might want to let Formula know that you don't have a dealer near you. They ship to me because of that reason. No real price break, but it is convenient.

Re: 89 242 SS - What's behind the door?
Actually, I found out some interesting stuff today -- in the case of that particular key, it's not Formula specific. It's a generic key and probably opens a lot of people's truck covers and stuff as well as my (and your) storage compartment.
http://64.233.161.104/search?q=cache...+E3-5-15&hl=en is a link that will take you to a Google-cached version of a story in the St Augustine Record from last year about a guy that got freaked out about all the people who could open his truck bed cover with this key. I found a couple places on line where I can buy the key (which is less than five bucks as was mentioned earlier), except they all want to charge me like six bucks to ship it to me via UPS! But in the case of things that ARE Formula specific, it would be sweet to be able to buy the stuff on line. I know I would pick up a lot of stuff if I could go put in my boat year and model and pick stuff up. I'm sure when you call you might get a real helpful parts person, but I don't really dig calling somebody up and asking if they have the "thingy" that holds on the "gadget" over by the "other thingy". For example, on both sides of my cockpit there are multicolored vinyl covered trim pieces. They are not torn or anything, but some time ago they bled and got stained. I guess the guy two owners ago called Formula and they agreed to ship him two replacements, but the boat changed hands before they were received and the guy I bought the boat from never hooked back up with the dude to get em. But I don't even know what those things are called. If I could go to the website and see an exploded diagram of my boat and a parts list and price the stuff out, that would be sweet. Same for a lot of other stuff. But nobody seems to have that kind of functionality. I know in some cases, dealer agreements and territories (Yanmar comes to mind) prevent a dealer from selling product into another dealer's turf. Maybe that is the case here, I dunno. Lots of national brands with those kinds of agreements have that functionality on their corporate site, and once you want to actually buy the stuff, they run the order and pass it to the dealer that "owns" the customer's turf. And sites like Go2Marine don't hold any inventory at all, they basically just broker transactions for vendors who do the fulfillment. But I'm just selfish and want to be able to go to Formula's website and buy a service manual and some replacement FORMULA chrome letters for my boat and some other stuff...is that so much to ask? I can't even find a Formula decal to put on the side windows of the canopy on my truck. Best I can find on the Formula website is a window cling that goes on the inside. Grumble. Grumble. |
