Best way to fill "bolt holes" no longer used on transom

Not quite sure the best way to fill four bolt holes that will no longer be used on my transom. My first thought is to cut a hardwood dowel the appropriate length, smear the inside of the hole with FG resin, and drive the dowel into the hole a sixteenth of an inch past the "plane" of the transom, then filling with Marine Tex?

Anybody got any better ideas?

you crank that thing up yet ? The holes are about 1/4" ? 4 ? I would think the the dowel would work fine ...if you recessed it just enough so you could put some resin and then gelcoat you wouldnt ever know it was there .... Took BadNews out Friday for a cpl of hours ..ran pretty good ..maybe bad times are behind us ...

The dowel method is what I've always heard to repair them.

Stainless steel carridge head bolts are quick and easy. When the holes are that small it looks fine in most instances. Very often you see brand new boats with bolt heads exposed that are holding something inside the transom.

Dowels it is... Thanks guys.

Spacers are ready and will pick up Monday. Looks like maybe Thursday trailer the boat up to "the Gusman's" shop to put it back together. That will also give me a couple of days to paint the spacers black.

I'm getting excited.......:D :D

Fine art takes time Cooderman, fine art takes time.....:D :D

The dowels are now in place with about an eighth/inch recess. Am going to use white Marine Tex to fill it basically even, then white gelcoat to finish it off and feather and buff.

Got a few more little "dings" to fill while I'm doing the gelcoat thing. I've never really done gelcoat before so it'll be interesting how it comes out.

Tell me about it. In a couple months, it'll be a year I started painting this one. After ragging you about two days to paint the spacers, I actually got out and painted on it for the first time in well over a month. I think I'm done with the hull now, unless I decide to paint a black stripe on the transom. I'm ready to get this thing out of my garage!

Remember, I gotta prime the spacers then finish coat, so two days ain't THAT bad. LOL.

This is getting so so close to finally being back on the water. :drink: :D
