Bottom Coat?
 

Another question for you guys: When I power washed my boat this past season the gelcoat chipped (under waterline). It had fine cracks to start with. It's a 86 357. Should I paint the bottom with something? I had it surveyed at the beginning of last season and the hull seemed fine. The small cracking was there but didn't seem to be a problem.

The small cracks are probably just stress cracks on the gelcoat, look carefully and you should be able to tell if it's "blistered" or not, a much worse problem.

Don't paint. Just regelcoat it.

Thank you. Is regelcoating a big process? Do you mean just the chips or entire bottom? I leave the boat in a slip all season. It's in fresh water so it only gets slimy but no barnicles. It does not look like blistering but there may be a couple small ones. How much do you think it would cost to have it regelcoated?

Use a product called VC Epoxy, Its teflon based it protects against blistering and is so easy to clean at the end of the season. Especially if you are leaving your boat in the water for extended periods of time.

As far as cost a kit which includes 1 gallon of paint and 1 gallon of activator should run you about 100 to 150 bucks.

I put this stuff on my Baja 320, and I love it the boat picked up a little bit of speed and most of all it is white unlike most other bottom paints. And with it being teflon based nothing will stick to it. Spray it off and your done!!!!!!!!!!!1

Fleg1, VC sounds interesting. What type of primer did you use? Does it seem as durable as other epoxy paints?

Fleg1: I like that idea, sounds simple enough. How long does it last? Is this an annual event to repain with this VC Epoxy? Any prep required besides cleaning?
