Last year I decided to start updating the look of my formula I had some upholsty work done...I had a new sunpad done...I also covered the dull black of the dashboard and passanger side with a carbon fiber vinyl and I put in white gauges!! This year I am painting the vents and hatches to white and getting white rubrail! Tell me what you think so far?

Looks good. Did you have new foam installed in the sun pad, and what did it cost?

I painted the vents on my 20 Formula with the Rustoleum for plastic. I'm here to tell you it's some tuff stuff. I got some on my arm, and it took over a week to wear it off.

Eldiablo206-
Looks Really nice. I have been trying to update my 311 the same way, but still don't know what to do with the dash. Who's gauges did you use? How hard is it to find the right switch on the dash without them being labled? Attached are a few pictures of my updated interior.

Mopower-
Who made your dash panels?

Re: Some updated pics of the 206

I did not replace the foam...it was in very good shape. It cost me about 1500 I cannot remember the exact amount...as far as the gauges they are LIDO PRO they were fairly inexpensive and they look very good with the chrome ring on the white...They came out MUCH better than I thought they were going to

As far as not having the labels on there for the switches it is very simple to remember them...plus I think it looks cleaner!

As far as painting of the vents and hatchesI will look into the rustoleum...I have talked with formula outlaw and he has suggested krylon fusion for plastic...it is getting excelet reviews and I have ordered it...I am just waiting for it to come so can get started...I can't wait...my father thinks I am crazy and that I should wait till spring but I can't help it I bought a garage and the boat is fully sheltered I have a propane heater... I am good to go...

Oh and I am also thinking about removing the very thick black stripe that goes aroudnt he back of the boat...I know it will be hard and I will have ot wet sand but I think it will look very very smooth... I am also going to take of the platform and see what kind of condition it is in...I might replace it with an extreme marine one and some nice exhaust tips...what do you guys thing about that idea?
and thanks

Thanks for the kind words. I am also 24. I will be selling my boat after next season so when you are ready to move up let me know.
Removing the black stripe of the back of the boat would be a good idea. It will just take a lot of time.
As for the platform idea, I know I am one off the only people that likes the OEM swim platforms on the formula's, but that is my opinon.....Attached is a picture of the back of my boat with the black stripe remove so you get an idea of what it would look like.

Dgduck - you're not alone. I love what Outlaw did with his boat but for what I use mine for - swimming with the kids, wakeboarding, skiing - the platform is a must.

dgduck, is that a 311. What power? How did you do the fairing in place of the windshield. If you are selling I might be interested. Joe Murray

One more vote for the factory platform...I wouldn't buy an older Formula without it.

dgduck, is the dash painted or gelcoated? If paint, what did you use?

Looks awesome BTW...

All those boats are looking very good guys, very good. DG, I love the white interior of your boat. That is in the "not too distant future for Outlaw"

And I can see where some people like the Silent Thunder platforms. It certainly is distinctive and different. I just feel the same about them as Cuda does biminis.

I DON'T NEED NO STINKIN MUFFLERS......:D :D

Ok, I did a search and see that you used Sherwin Williams automotive paint and clearcoat... That's a project I hope to do this spring.

Wow, that seems high. Was that just to recover the sunpad? I got a quote of $400 to redo the one on my 302 and that was with a Formula Bird logo sewn in it. I moved away from there before I had it done.

I paid 1800 to do the sunpad, rear seat, and side panels on my 272. Basically everything but the bolsters.

DG--let us know about that fairing!!

Maritime_Eng 01-09-2005 10:45 PM

Re: Some updated pics of the 206

The reason I like the swim platform is it gives our boats the "formula" look. It is hard to mistake a formula no matter what year. If you take the platform away then it becomes a little harder to tell them apart from the rest. I mean if you own a formula you should be proud of that, I now I am!
The Fairing for the boat is alot of work,I think I had about 600 hours into it and if you look under "Project 311" you can find out the basics on how I made the fairing. If you have any other questions just PM me and I will explain it. Also I am in the process of moving to Cape Coral, fl. Once I move down I will be making a mold for the fairing and will sell a complete faring if anyone is interested. I am making it just in case something happens to mine. This way I will have some place to start from instead of going back to square one. Let me know if you are interested, I don't know the price yet but i will let you know as soon as I know.
And I don't think anyone feels the same way about anything as Cuda does about biminis......

Mark from MearImage...but he seems to have fallen off the face of the earth
I know he has had numerous heath problems since he was hit by a car on a snowmobile some time back.
It's a shame , because he duplicated the originals only on the reverse color scheme and redsigned the guage panel for twin oil temps , fuel pres. and water pres.
It's not in this photo but he also did the passenger side perfectly. It even has the same texture as the original so no glare

dgduck13 is right, I think the factory Silent Thunder platform is great.
My F-206 has it and I couldn't do without it. Most member don't think it sounds good enough or is loud enough. I'll stick with it because sooner or later all states will have noise limits on boats and I won't have to worry about it.

Here's my F-206 http://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/s...ad.php?t=50864

I do, about the Silent Thunder platforms. I don't like the rectangular exhaust tips. To me, and this is only my opinion, they should be ROUND. Had Formula been able to make the tips round, I would have liked it much better. Maybe they did this for a "Formula" look, and if others like that, more power to them. I just don't. Again, like Cuda, I like the look of a clean transom. Plus it is a lot of weight and our boats (311's) are already very azz heavy. Between losing that platform and swapping to the EMI Thunder exhaust I've dropped 400 lbs of dead weight right over the props. Get two two hundred pound guys and have them stand on the platform and watch how much lower it goes in the water. Well that's how much higher my boat now is and combined with my Hydromotive props (stern lifting as we all know) I should have even less drag, same as shortening the "X" demension, which theoretically should increase speed at all rpm levels.

When I modified my box, it improved the sound to what I would deem acceptable for an offshore boat. I also gained over 200 rpms when I did the mods.

I am very very proud of owning a Formula, they are unquestionably the best "mass" produced boat made. Countless magazine articles have favorably compared them to some of the best "custom" boats built.

Plus I've gotten nothing but positive feedback on dropping the platform.

Again, for you guys that like them more power to you. That's what makes the world a better place, that we all like to do different things to our boats to make them special, especially to us. R

Wow I like the blue...I had my throttle powdercoated they were worn like yours, you can see it in the top pic...Much better!

I am going to take my platform off and see how it looks...I hate how azz heavy my boat sits beacuse of it small size

As I said I like mine. It seems to hold up very well in the sun and because the pieces of the dashboard you are mounting them on are simple in design (just a bunch of squares), it was very easy to put on.

Bill272 - Who did you get to do your interior? Are you happy with the work? I've got my interior out beacuse I want to go all white with it but I haven't picked a shop yet. Shelby Auto Trim did some work on my last boat and I was very happy with it. They are comparible in price to what you paid.

Outlaw - What's wrong with rectangular exhaust ????

I don't recall the guys name and I don't think he's working anymore. He was working out of his house in SCS and had Lou Gehrig's disease. This was about 4 years ago. He did a great job for a fair price, but I felt bad for him since he said he probably was only going to be able to do a few more jobs before he'd have to quit.

We didn't go all white, but did take the pink and black out of the vinyl. We kept the individual sections on the sunpad, but got rid of the two rows of stitching that went through the platform. That seems like a weak spot in the vinyl of the late 80's Formulas (ours was split in a few spots).

Bill272 - Was his house by 10 Mile and Jefferson in SCS? If this is the same guy he's supposedly still in business. He was also recommended by a guy who stores his boat at the same marina I do.
