292???
I currently have a 2000 271 Fastech, and I am considering a 2004 292 Fastech. any thoughts from anyone on the 292? the one I am considering has twin 6.2L merc's, the dealer is saying 75ish on gps. the 6.2 puts out 320 horses, where a set of 350's puts out 300 horses each. anything thoughts on paying the extra money for the engines as well? all input appreciated!

Re: 292???
The 292 is a very nice boat, we like ours very much. I'd go with the 6.2s, has a little more tork than the 350. I don't think you'll see 75ish, more like 69-71ish, but a good ride.

Re: 292???
what engines do you have and what speeds are you getting?

Re: 292???
Zoomer, I have the 6.2s, which I like very much. I'm set up for a better mid range cruise than WOT, but I run 70gps.

Re: 292???
I am of the un-informed opinion that the 6.2's are out of production and after-market perforance parts are scarce. I'm sure some on the board can offer more input regarding that statement. If true, I would be concerned because you will want to boost the HP eventually. (Or the next owner will want to and pass on your boat.)

We have the 6.2's and don't think i'd go with much less. The boat has run 70.2 gps w/4 people and less than a 1/2 tank of gas so I'm with Live Wire II, you won't see much of 70 with the standard steup. That was on relatively smooth water around 65 deg. The 6.2's do a great job from 30 - 60mph and will give you about all you want. Also I'd recommend going with the Lathem steering with the 6.2's. Moving up to twins for us was an experience and gave me....more things to have to dial in, adjust, push, pull, etc. The steering just helps make the transition smoother. After I figured it out I don't know how I ever got around with a single and without tabs.
As for upgrading the hp if you want, I don't think I'd do it with a 292. For safety's sake if you want more speed I'd go with a bigger boat that can handle the speed better. 70mph in a 292 is fun but I'd feel more comfortable going faster in something bigger. So if you're thinking eventually more hp, you might just want to look 312 or 353 fastech with the ponys. If that's not an option and more hp is what you want, I think Whipple now makes add on's for the 6.2. Here's a pic. Nothing fancy but it'll make you really want to get that boat. Good luck and let me know if you have any more ????? |
Re: 292???
The 6.2's are not going away, you may be thinking of the 377 Scorpion version,it was too expensive for the market. The 320 hp 6.2 should be around for a long time.

I Have A 2002--292 W/t Scorpions For Sale , If Interested Send Me A P/m Or Email

Re: 292???
I'm not surprized the Scorpions are being discontinued, when I looked at a 292 year before last, the upgrade to Scorps was $32k!
I ended up buying a bigger, faster, (although older) whole damn boat for less than the upgrade to Scorps. :p |
Re: 292???
I loved the boat by the way.

Re: 292???
what happened to the rest of this thread?!?!?!?!?!?!

Re: 292???
I've got a 292 with the 350s. I love the boat. The best I've seen speed-wise was 70 on GPS and that was with the gas tank almost empty and only me on the boat. A good average for the 350s seems to be around 67-69. I've heard the 6.2s are only a mile per hour or two faster. I'd be skeptical of the 75ish. In any event, the 292 is a great boat and I'm sure you'll like it. You can always drop a couple ProChargers in on those 6.2s if they don't perform the way you want.

thanks for the info!

Re: 292???
Zoomer, did you decide to take the plunge? I love my 292. For what it's worth, I run a consistant 75-78 with Scorps load dependant. I've seen 80 real light in a following chop. It's a great boat, trailerable, family friendly but still fun with the boys, more fuel friendly than big blocks, and it's good in most seas (the wife likes it unless the bay is real kicked up).
The Fastech hull is a little slow coming on plane but runs sweet once up. I replaced the standard Bennett tabs with K-Planes...big difference. Next the box comes off, new headers and I'm gonna try some Hydromotive 5 Blades. Good luck on the choice. |
Re: 292???
I'm headed to Miami in three weeks to check it out. I will also ride on the 353 and 383, I'm hoping not to go to crazy and end up wanting the 353!

Re: 292???
I'd love a 353...I'm headed to the Baltimore show this w/e but I'll try not to drool all over it. Robert has a sweet 05 listed, it's a little rich for my blood this year but it sure looks good. Maybe next year if I can convince the wife that she really needs a vacuflush head and a set of 525's to better enjoy the summer! Enjoy Miami...it was 14 degrees here in the Mid-Atlantic this morning!

Re: 292???
Bikini Bottom,
Can you list the specs of the K-planes, what it took to install them and what performance gains you saw (ie: planning time, ride, etc) Thanks. |
Re: 292???
Smokin,
I went with Eddie Marine Billet 12X24" tabs with a cut-out for drive clearance, they are heavy duty and look pretty slick. The install was a weekend plus project because of fiberglass filling and paint mostly (Learning point: triple check tab placement and drive clearance up/down/left/right b4 drilling...or drill & fill one side twice!). I ran the thru-hulls above the tab mounting plate for stringer grid & transom depth issues (might have been able to mount on the tab plate if motors were out). Because of the non-standard thru-hull location, I special ordered another set of SS lines. The Formula K-Plane indicators and switches work 4.0 but I needed the Eddie Marine actuator kit to mount the indicator cables to the tabs. All in all it looks professional and works great (Joe Rhode from Eddie was a great resource in figuring the project out). Performance: I plane 1-1.5 seconds quicker, stay on plane down to 20 (kids wakeboard/tubing) instead of falling off at 24-25, and run much better in big water with a lot more wetted surface area and much quicker tab response than the Bennetts. |
