Kaama boots

Is Archer still the only source for boots or is anything else available ? Anyone have Archers number? Thanks.

Re: Kaama boots

I ordered one from them probably a year ago. They didn't know when they were going to make them again. Sounded to me like they had a problem with whoever made the boots.

That's who I called nearly a year ago.

Thanks, I'll give you them a call. I thought I read a thread a while ago that said there was a new surface drive out that used the same boot.

Re: Kaama boots

Update. Just talked to Archer. The company they got the boots from had a problem with the molds. As a result no boots will be available untill they get new molds. They hope it will be about 2 months. I'm glad they sell enough of them to have new molds made otherwise we would be screwed.

That's what they told me a year ago. It sounded like there was a dispute over an old bill or something to me.

Re: Kaama boots

I was told that the company that made the boots for them was sold. There was some problem with the new owner and the molds, not sure what it was. You say 1 year ago they told you it was going to be 2 months for the molds? Maybe there will be a problem getting new boots after all. I knew I should have bought them when I had the chance, even though I didn't need them then.

The bad part is that I had an extra boot. A fellow Oso'er needed one quickly, and mine was a spare, so I sold it to him figuring I could order another one. So much for being a nice guy. :(

I guess we better start looking for a good patch. I was also thinking of ordering a set although I don't need them at the moment you never know when something is going to happen.

Re: Kaama boots

Hey guys,
Time to update this thread. I bought a 1986 F311 Kaama and in the process ended up talking to Dan at Archer Marine. The boot story is that when Kaama closed, Gary (original owner of Archer and former Kaama employee) purchased the mold for the boot. Gary sold Archer to Dan (his employee at Archer). The boot mold had been stored at the rubber molding plant. The rubber molding plant was sold to a new owner and this new guy apparently threw the mold into the garbage, not knowing or trying to find out what it was or who owned it. (with me so far?) Obviously this upset Dan at Archer Marine to some extent. It costs about $15,000.00 to make a mold like that. Well it takes a while and as mentioned, a lot of $ to do the mold for the boots for what is a limited market at best. For us Kaama guys the boots are critical. Well there is a very strong possibility that our prayers may be answered. I think there might be new boots available during the next year sometime but I'm sure we can expect a price increase to help pay for that mold. I hope the $ are moderate. Keep the Faith.... ALJ
BTW...We need to have some way to put together a sub-forum or something about Kaama Drives. If we search for "Kaama" we have to wade through all of the username "kaama" posts. No offense Kaama but you have a lot of threads and posts out there dude. Anybody have any Ideas? I'm thinking of an area where we can really help each other out with tech info and parts and repair vendors.

Re: Kaama boots

Also we should have some kind of Kaama boat registry. Something with all boat manufacturers that installed Kaamas.
Dontcha tink?

Re: Kaama boots

Alj that is a great Idea. My suggestion is to email OSO and ask them for a section for drives that are out of the ordinary such as Kaama, Arneson, Sage and so on.

I think I've been waiting almost 2 years for boots. Didn't bother me that much because I wasn't using the boat anyway. Now I'm getting worried, I plan on using the boat this summer and I need 2 boots.

A KAAMA section in the owners forum would be nice. It would be nice to have some idea of how many Kaama drive boats are around.

Hey josh,
I saw somewhere that you might be looking for a Kaama boat again????? Picked up a F311 in september. Decent boat but it has a few needs and a few wants. This boat will be a better fit for our use here and a little easier to tow if we go visiting areas like over by you. Pics are too large I'll post in a few........

Alj.....nice looking boat. Where did you pick that up from?
Still got the 402? I saw someone up in the Seattle area had a kaama 402 for sale.
And it looks like Doc Evans 357 kaama is for sale again...Jim... :D

Re: Kaama boots

Found the F311 thru an OSO post. Picked it up in Havasu Arizona. Still have the F402 but I'm hoping to find a good home for it. The F402 in Seattle looks like a nice boat and a lot of new work has been put into it..... :drink:

i know im in the wrong section of the forums....

but i bought a 30 foot excalibur cat in november with kaama drives on it and obviously first thing i did was call archer marine and talked to dan about numerous questions, boots being one of them because i wanted to get an extra set to have on the shelf just in case.

the latest he told me was that he had a company making them a new mold and there was about 10 people in front of me on a waiting list to get a set of boots. he did not give me a price but said he was hoping to have boots ready to go for sale in the march / april time frame.

so there might be a light at the end of the tunnel for everyone....

If anyone else is looking for a Formula with Kaama drives, I know where there is one for sale on Grand Lake in Oklahoma. Don't know much about the boat, but can give you the owners name and number. PM me if interested. Just thought I would throw that out there for you guys.

Sea Dated

Is that the one across from Hammerhead? I've never seen that boat off its lift but looks perfect. What is he asking for it?

Dregsz 03-14-2008 06:14 PM

Any new boot info?
What other parts for the Kaama drive are hard to find or Kaama only items?

bck 03-14-2008 11:42 PM

The only wear item that is hard to get is the boot. I personally have given up on Archer. I have been told they are working on it for years now. If they ever get them I will buy them but I expect to have to find a solution to this problem myself.

BigBlocks 03-18-2008 04:32 PM

I had a Kaama drive boat back in the late 90's. At the time, I ordered new boots from Archer. The boots I received appeared to be too short. They would often pull off. When I finally got them secured, they ripped. With no other options at the time, I actually went out and used tractor tire inner tubes. I am ashamed to come clean with this method, but they worked pretty well. I cut them to size and installed over the ripped boots. When they appeared to be getting weak, I just cut new ones out and reinstalled them. For guys who are in desperate need of boots, this is a temporary fix.

Kaama Drive Boot Tractor Tire Inner Tube Fix

BigBlocks,

Do you recall what size inner tubes you used for your shade tree repair? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

BOATMAN302 02-19-2009 12:18 PM

The housings themselves are getting hard to find. Spares are nice to have. Gear sets are still available by the original supplier as well as shafts. Bruce

Audiofn 02-24-2009 07:51 AM

There was a guy that posted in the drive area of I think this site last week or the week before that said he could make them!

Audiofn 02-24-2009 07:53 AM

Kaama drive for sale

If you know anyone who needs a drive with boot and seals I have one for sale. Call me at 727-464-8531 Don. The gears are new and housing is in great shape. Short shaft and 2 sets of new seals. Boot is in good shape. My boat got stolen while I was rebuilding the kaama so I have it and no hope of finding the boat now. I will sell the drive, boot, and seals for $1500 for fast sale. Got my eves on another boat with different drives.

alj 02-27-2009 11:01 AM

Hey Kaama boat guys,
lets try to keep this active. Take a look at the thread that audiofn linked above. I'm not sure but things sure haven't progressed with Archer Marine. I think it's time to figure the boot problem out on our own. Anyone with CNC or molding experience out there?
