Well I must say, I don't have much time to check this forum, my son is on it all the time and is responsible for me having joined this forum. I have a question about Camshafts. Likely, someone has already addressed this but I would like to ask anyway.... I intend to freshen up our 454's , they are 365 hp magnums. I have purchased 1 set of roller rockers and lifters. I am looking for another set, I have been watchful to Ebay, lookin for deals... Anyway, I will eventually obtain the 2nd set, and i was wondering if anyone could recommend an appropriate marine roller camshaft. Our boat is a 311, and I am not looking for anything too wild, but would like something with some snot. I am hoping ( likely a fantasy) that I can just re-ring and put new bearings in. I will tear it all down and have the block boiled and new cam bearings and frost plugs installed. Freshen the heads and all that... I am still curious about what the difference between the merc 365hp is vs. the 420hp. I read in another article that the 420's seem to have all the same "goodies", per se... I.E. forged crank and pistons.
Also, they have the rectangular port heads. So is it just the camshaft that makes the difference in horsepower? Any thoughts that anyone has would be most appreciated.

I do agree that winter (up north!) is boring without boating. Boat payments in the winter are tough too. All of that money from November - March in payments but can only use the boat April - October. I think guys in Florida have the right idea. I keep telling myself that inexpensive winter weekends allow me to save up $$$ so that I won't feel so bad burning through $200+ of unleaded gas per weekend in the summer.

This thread needs a picture. One of our favorite past times is cruising the bay and taking pictures of lighthouses. This one was easy b/c it is right near the marina. We can't wait for the spring thaw!

This question would be MUCH better to address in the tech Q+A area. You will get a LOT of replys from some guys that really know their stuff.

At any rate best I know the lower ends are the same. The top ends are very different. 420's are all roller valve train. I also think that they are oval ports not square. Don't be worried about that however as your square ports should be able to make a few more ponies.

Today's run up to MarVista. The bridge is one last 3 remaining "swing" bridges left operating in Florida.

Tee shirts, shorts, and lots of sunblock, oh yeah, lots of bikinis thrown in for good measure. :drink: :drink:

Ive just realised that your in Ontario, Canada.

From a boating point of view i guess winter is a bummer alright.

Im coming over to Lake Louise Skiing in a few months, cant wait.

I cant comment on Ontario because ive never been to the East side of Canada, i allways go to Vancouver and the Rockies. Man i should have been born a Canadian, Canada is a truly fabulous country with Ice Hockey, Skiing, Ski dooing, walking, boating, wonderfull people & scenery to die for.

We were thinking of emigrating to Canada as our son absolutely loved the place and wanted to go to university in Vancouver. However, sadly Ben passed away last year and as you can imagine our lives have been put on hold indefinately.

Who knows, maybe one day we will still end up there? but for the meantime we will have to make do with the skiing holidays there once a year.

My appologies if my previous post seemed a little rude man but since the loss of our son i have found myself to be a little "Prickly". No offence meant.

I'm not from Ontario. From eastern end of Lake Ontario in New York. But, in keeping with your thoughts on Canada, that's the only other country I'd live in. Canada is a cool place. Canadians have a nice easy outlook on life.

As for the comment,,,,,,, I did wonder about the seemingly nasty comeback. No biggy though. I was just trying to stimulate some dialog regarding this winter hibernation from boating up here in the north. And the discussions do get a little slow with no summer experiences to relate. Reading about Outlaw down there in Fla is enough to make me wanna quit my job and move down there. I used to be into snomobiles (35 years of it!!). Gave it up two years ago, just no fun anymore. So, with no winter interests, SNOW SUCKS!!!! :mad:

I'm real sorry about your son. I can relate somewhat, my daughter was in a very bad car crash last September. She's still with us but has many issues now. She's working hard at rehab but it's a slow process. I wish you strength in coping with your loss. It just doesn't seem right or fair though does it?

I went to VT. this past summer to meet GLH and some of his crew what a great time take a look at this pic talk about shrinkage :D His boat is unreal along with many others.

Hey Mopower,
Although I prefer indoor storage over wrapping, you did a real nice job sealing that 272 up. I noticed you have the tires and coupler covered also. Nice work, looks snug as a bug :cool:

ps: I like how you took the wrap all the way to the chine. Most guys don't do that. Saves some weathering on the hullsides.

Particularly when the sun is low in the sky in the winter it would beat on the starboard side most of the day :( . Also have a zippered door in the back over the swim platform for access to work on anything or just check it out. There is really no reason not to go to the chines. The wrap is big enough and if you don't , you only wide up cutting it off and throwing the excess away. Here's the frame work.

ps. The tire covers are reusable RV tire covers :D
