I appreciate all the input guys. Kind of reinforces everything I've heard. I spend most of my time in the 3500rpm range anyway and have a tough time keeping up with some buddies whose cruise speed is much better than mine.

Ease it out of the hole, and be careful when flying. With the depth of the drive, it's hard to get it airborn enough to over rev the prop anyway. When changing drive oil this winter, there was no metal in it, so so far, so good. |

Hi Guys.
Was tweaking my '89 292 (stock 365HP Mags) by putting Stainless Marine Exhaust, Imco nosecones, Holley high flow flame arrestors and was revving the old girls 5300+ :eek: vs prior at 5050. Harrassed the Mercury racing guys (actually spoke with the late Dennis Cavenaugh..nice guy, RIP). They recommended 25P Mirage plus 3's (said the 4's were too much stern lift). Now back around 5 grand and the boat runs 73MPH on a good day :D on Nordskog GPS speedo. Have read that the older Formulas have deep X dimensions and if top speed is your goal go for the 3's. Otherwise for midrange speed and coming on plane the 4's work well. Just depends what you are looking for. |
