Engine alignment in a 27
I am taking off my outdrive and doing a motor swap at the same time out with the 454 carb in with the 502 Mag MPI. I was wondering how do you set the alignment. Had a profile before and there were screw jacks on the motor mounts am I missing something. Brian

Re: Engine alignment in a 27
Fountain uses offshore mounts. Those screw adjustable mounts you are used to are known for backing off throwing the alignment out. Plus the offsshore is SOLID, tieing the motor to the stringers.
1st see where you are at with the motor bolted in tight. Therotically it should be OK, but if it is out, loosen( not remove) the bolts that hold the mount to the AL angle plate. Don't loosen the bolts going thru the stringer if at all possible. Usually if the alignment is close, the slop in the bolt holes may be enough to realign, then tighten. If the slop is not enough, then remove thoses bolts and align the motor. Once aligned, clamp the mount to the AL plate securely and recheck alignment. If still good, then redrill the bolt holes with the next size bolt. Use the same size drill as the bolt, ie 1/2" bit for 1/2" bolt. Don't go oversize! Do 1 hole on each side and bolt it tight, making sure the motor mount is tight against the AL angle plate the full length. Then recheck alignment. If all is good, then drill the remaining holes. |
