Valvoline VR-1 20W-50 or straight weights have a good conventional base stock. But only .137 ZDDP and .23 calcium/magnesium anti wear agents. Also, lots of moly so it is a slick oil.

That's not too bad though low on ZDDP but the VI is only 130 which is about as good as you can get with a conventional oil.
These oils will shear down a grade or two viscosity wise as will most conventional and even some synthetics will as well.

Mobil-1 V-twin has a VI of 160+...anything around 150+ will not shear down. It has ZDDP levels around .25 and .20 boron which is the best of the best. Plus it is free of moly so your rollers spin.

...and the Mobil-1 v-twin is a bit better in specs than the Amsoil 20W-50 too...

I heard of a guy who ran a boat for a year with Amsoil..same guy? :D 1,000 hours on a boat is doable with these outstanding oils.

You really can run a season if you really wanted to with V-twin or Amsoil SD....just change the Mobil-1 or Amsoil SD filters a couple times a year is all.

I have gone all season my self...100 hrs as the V-twin oil liiked fine.

Until the new Goldcap is out think V-Twin.

Hydro - please tell me more... I just returned from a race in Sarasota and just read the updates to this thread. Before I left, I changed my oil and used the Goldcap 15w-50. I also bought extra from Walmart for my next oil change :(

I ran for 45 mins at (mostly) WOT, oil temps in the 260-280 range. I have the Smoke on the Water poker run planned for this weekend, and wasn't planing on changing before then.

Do I need to find some v-twin and change ASAP? What are the release timings for the reformulated Goldcap? Is there a "recall" in the works?

You da Man.

Thanks,
Brian

Thank you for the help Hydro. I am not hard on my engines at all. Would you suggest that I change to mobil-1 V-Twin? I have just over 200 Hours.

Amsoil 20W-50 with a amsoil filter. I pay $60 a case for it directly from amsoil. 502 Mag with 220 hrs., no problems yet. I change it every 25-30 hrs.

The Goldcap is being reformulated but not recalled. It will possibly go down to a 10W-40 I heard after some hard running...which is not the end of the world as any conventional oil does the same. It's just that redcap and V-Twin won't shear down.

Watch your oil pressure gage..if it thins out too much the pressure will be quite low and that is a sign to get it out sooner.
