What do you guys use to tow a 47? :eek: Any estimate on overall weight and tongue weight would be helpful. I have a Excursion 6 liter diesel... not sure that's enough???

I would suggest a dullie one ton min. I would think you are about 12,000 total.

You will be over 16k with trailer and fuel/water. Dually would be the obvious choice, but a 3/4 ton with tow package, FX4 will still work. THE EXCURRSION WILL NOT BE SAFE WITH THAT WEIGHT. Dont travel past 70-72mph for safety reasons, and give yourself a reasonable amount of distance between vehicles. Bring along a tire plug repair kit, can of fix a flat(dont like using it unless have to) a 4-5 ton jack, small air compressor. Good luck. Jeff

You need a 1-ton dually at the minimum. I think the new Fords are rated for 17,000 lbs, but that is with a goose neck trailer.

I tow my 47 with a 99 F-350 Dually diesel and it is a load. I keep the speed to 55-60mph max and keep plenty of distance to stop. If the roads didn't have so many idiots cuttting me off and tailgating, it would be a much easier tow. I would get a F-550 with a goose neck if I was to tow this boat a lot.

don't be this guy... a dually is the minimum... a medium duty would be better.... dry weight is shown at 13,400 + trailer + fuel + crap... i bet you are closer to 18k when all said and done....

That's ridiculous, I own the same truck and tow a 1977 Scarab 300 with twins at 10,000lbs loaded no problem, but please...

If you are planning on towing a lot, I would definitely go for a medium duty. I tow mine only a few times a year with a chevy 1 ton dually. Coming back from Lake Cumberland last year I put the whole rig on a Cat scale. Truck, boat, trailer, some gear, and half fuel was 27,500 lbs. I'm not sure about the tounge weight, I would guess around 1,000 lbs. (I have a class 5 hitch).

A properly equipped 1-ton (non-dually) or even 3/4 ton will tow just as much as a dually, they are actually able to tow more weight do to the GVRW. Does that mean its safe, breaking it down, alot has to do with common sense, and set up. I lost 3 1-ton duallys in the storm, and replaced them with 1 06 F350 dually and 2 F250 w/20's from the factory. All three have the camper pack.,FX4 and so on. When towing my 18k trailers they tow within 5% of each other, hard to tell up to 70mph, after that the dually is more stable, but cumbersom for daily driving. We put an appr. 30-50k miles per year on these trucks and trailers. Less maint. on tires, rotation, and just overall getting to the inner tire can be a PITA. The dually is the proper way to go, but for occasional the others will work, be safe. Good luck.

I've seen it done with a GMC 2500 Diesel on a pretty steep ramp...guy towed from Indianapolis to Hammond, IN, which is a 4 hour trip towing, said he had no prob, but man, did that boat dwarf the truck. I tow a 35 with an F350 single and there's no trouble. However, I would upgrade your hitch...even with a "tow package" on a big truck, they are only rated for like 5000 lbs! I was shocked at that one! Went out and bought a Class V Kurt hitch and problem solved.

You can get a Class 5-5 ton from the factory, then get the stabilizers w/chain for long trips, just bought another one and tried it, made a big difference on the 15k I just pulled. The F250 suspension is much better than the 2500 GMC we just got, major difference.
