Messy Oil Filter Removal
I have 1997 Mercury HP525SC motors. The oil filters are located on the back of the motors.
Removing the filters I spill oil into the bilge. I have tried rags and platic bags to catch the spill with minimal success. Is there a better way? Joel |
Re: Messy Oil Filter Removal
Try unscrewing oil filter just enough to break the seal. Wait 20 min and remove... see if that helps.
|
Re: Messy Oil Filter Removal
And when you are done pour some Joy soap in the bilge to cut the oil
|
Re: Messy Oil Filter Removal
Presumably this would break a vacumm and allow the oil to drain back into the motor? Would oil also leak out into the bilge?

2. only if it dribbles |
Re: Messy Oil Filter Removal
I have the same problem. I have heavy real heavy plastic bags and have to take a few extra min to get the bag in place and this works ok for me. If some gets away ,I use the purple cleaner from walmart and hose it fast . Good luck.

Thank you for your response.
Kinda amazing that for the money these toys cost a bit more thought wasn't put into design!

Re: Messy Oil Filter Removal
Anybody thought of or installed remote oil filter kits. I have had them in a larger sportfish boat. They are then right where you want them.

Re: Messy Oil Filter Removal
If the filters are inverted, meaning pointing down...
Take a screwdriver that has a square shank about 3/8 in diameter, and pop a hole in the very top center of the filter with a hammer. Let the screwdriver insert a couple inches, but not far enough to extend out the bottom of the filter. Let the filter drain into the pain for about 20-30 minutes before you remove it. You will not spill a drop; guaranteed... as the filter will be empty. I have a specific screwdriver that I cut and sharpened for this task. It works like a charm. |
Re: Messy Oil Filter Removal
the screwdriver thing is very good but the filters are still a ***** to get at. The relocating kits solve everything once and for all forever. They can probably be found on the net with a little serching. I'll see if I can find a site and post it. I do not have pictures of my past set up which was very slick (no pun intended) Both filters were located side by side eliminating the fact that One is on the oposite side of the engine than the other.

Re: Messy Oil Filter Removal
Here is an exam[le of a kit to do the relocation job.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...705?n=15684181 This can be installed anywhere you want but I would not install them higher than the engine location so that the oil will run out of the lines when changing the oil. |
Re: Messy Oil Filter Removal
I use the "punching the hole" technique and it works pretty well on my 500's. They are easy to get at. If I were you I would remote mount them and put them right-side-up. I did this with my last boat. Nice thing was I could pre-fill the filters with oil.
Why does Mercury mount the filters upside-down anyway? |
Re: Messy Oil Filter Removal
I pop a hole in them with a screw driver also, works well.
WILL :D |
Re: Messy Oil Filter Removal
Yea, Good question?
"Why does Mercury mount the filters upside-down anyway"? |
Re: Messy Oil Filter Removal
I use an old laundry soap plastic container cutting off 3/4 of the top keeping the handle. Large enough to put under the filter and catch 99% of the oil from the filter. Kind of like a fishermans piss bucket. A quick wipe and your done.

Re: Messy Oil Filter Removal

Allen Hence: Fram = Junk Wix Racing/Napa = Quality |
I just changed my oil. I used K&N oil filters, punched a hole in the top and they did not drain. Anyone know why?
|
K&N has a rubber flapper inside. They are anti drain back filters. with K&N just crack it loose and wait 10 minutes then wrap a rag around it for residual oil and you are done. Only a very small amount drips and the rag you wrapped around it catches most of it...

just put a lot of DAWN dish in the bilge and pull the plug in the gravel. it will dilute out.

Why would you want oil in your bilge?.Oil fumes ,flammable, oil getting all over everything, the dawn will not get it all out, I wouldn't even want the smell of gas diluted oil in the engine compartment. I have just the place you can dump your oil behind a fiberglass shop here in Brandon on the ground.I would like to help them after ya do it, EPA:drink: |
do you want me to call dustin and get your stickers for you? i partied it up down in key west with good ol' dustin and we were talking about em. hes a good ol' friend of mine

Well I guess I need your help Yeller,I would appreciate it if you could get Dennis or Dustin Whipple to send them.I couldn't.The car/boat show has past now.but they still look bad. Back when we were Dynoing my engines in Louisiana,we needed smaller pulleys, we talked to Dustin and he said he would air freight Red label them so we could finish Thrus, we called that afternoon after they didn't show up,Dustin said he forgot:mad:I was out of town trying to get this finished and didn't want to take a chance of him screwing up again and not send them,so I drove all the back home, already waisted 2 days waiting on them,I told Mark call if they show up and ill try and come back down. Kinda like my local paint guy, ya got to baby sit them. Something so simple |
man, i know dustin gets busy, but you are a customer. sometimes when a company gets close to the top they forget who got them there, people like you Rob. not saying that whipple does this, but i hope you get what is owed to you. Yeller get them stickers:drink:
