short changed by shorties

the -2 sport masters I recently purchased got me no where with 1 1/2 " spacers

so they are in the classifieds now
for step bottom boat owners that what to go faster

I put my old drives back on and they slipped out at totally
above 5000 rpm and ran different rpm's with 4 different prop tests with the speed stuck at 82 mph gps .

new prop dealer says my 1988 factory nose coned drive need to change to post 1990 lower gear case does it sound right?

Or could I do something else to get my new sport masters to work for me ?

the boat is a 1989 no step 38 fever 700- 725 hp inter cooled 509 blower motors ran 80 mph with old blown 454 motors
previously with 520 hp before . how much could I expect from 400 hp additional when slippage is corrected?

NEED A BUYER OR A BETTER WAY TO RIG MY BRAND NEW SPORT MASTER SHORTIES THANKS!

What kind of props did you try.

May be a stupid question, but I assume these are complete drives? Standard or XR transom assemblies required? I have a 2000 38' Lightning with standard Bravo I's and am wondering what else (other than new props) I would need to make the switch. Thanks in advance.

I changed over from bravo one , merc has a upgraded kit
(helmet & gimble ring ) to make your current set up high performance , xr needs matching gimble Bering ,mine are xr sportmster shorties brand new for 7250 each interested ?

Thanks for the info. Looking into pricing on the additional parts you mentioned and labor to do the swap. Unfortunately it sounds like it's going to be more than I'm currently wanting to spend. Good luck.

HI there,

the final conclusion these drive don't work good with our type boats the spacers only picked up a little more speed but still had to much slip ! For a test I went back to my old drives (1988 bravos) tested with my new props and 3 other props as well . 27 5blade hydros 28 and 26 4 blade hydros and a
26 bravo one 4 blades with all different rpms all these props hit a wall at 82 mph gps . the old lower gear cases with bob's nosecones from fountain originally can't flow enough water to these props. So the wind up is I 'm in the process of trading my sportmaster lowers for a new pair of stock xr lowers
which should flow water better than a pre 1990 model bravo.
The sportmasters need to run with less trim than our boats
like to run with , so they like trim settings between 3-4
while my boat likes to run 5.5-6.5 trim that is where the incompatibility lies , the old bravo design is what I believe
is causing the extra slippage right now but the updated xr's
will hopefully put the boat from 82 to 86 to 88 mph.

My boat is a 2001 Classic, but still like to run with about the trim you described for your boat. I guess my boat wouldn't benefit from the shorties either?
