Bravo 1 Drive Showers
Is it worth installing drive showers on bravo 1s on a 1996 35' lightning with stock 502's?????????
|
Re: Bravo 1 Drive Showers
Yup, yup, yup.
Simreks are great. |
Re: Bravo 1 Drive Showers
This is the second boat that I had the Simreks on. The drives never get that white coating that means heat is present. Without them, I also had white appearing on the top of my drives. Well worth the effort and $.

FYI: All of my personal boats run them & we install them on all perfomance boats in our shop. :) Jamie / Lakeside 570-639-2628 |
Re: Bravo 1 Drive Showers
I run them

Re: Bravo 1 Drive Showers
even cruisers with stock power need drive showers!......according to Simrek testing the biggest heat builder is long periods of time on plane, even at moderate throttle settings with stock power you get high heat build up with that top gearset being out of the water for extended periods of time

Re: Bravo 1 Drive Showers
I dont know - looks to me that all of that water being pumped out of those four inch exhaust pipes out the back of the boat do a nice job of cooling the drives without adding the showers, but I could be wrong. Havent seen any white stuff and I run a lot of long distance cruising at around 55.

If you follow someone sometime watch the water coming out of the exhaust when planed off or running off of idle. Your exhaust's water stream will fall a few feet behind the drive.. Any water that may get on it from the exhaust wont helo anyway for a few reasons. The water coming out of the exhaust is not cold, the water that may get on the drives from the exhaust is not consistant & there would not be enough water going on to them to make a difference. The drive shower keeps a constant bath of cool water on the upper housing.. I hope this helps to explain what, why & how.. :) Jamie / Lakeside |
Re: Bravo 1 Drive Showers
Like 35 (I have the same rig), I have never seen any white buildup on the upper case or anywhere else for that matter. I hate to drill holes and add equipment that is not necessary. Someone ought to market an upper case temp sensor!

Re: Bravo 1 Drive Showers
I like the Eddie Marine or Dana drive showers...that chrome cap just look too cool to get anything else.

Re: Bravo 1 Drive Showers
I used the Simrek too and it cured the white on the drive. Simrek is not the best looking or bling bling of showers but they only one I've seen that really works.
However when you talk to Mercury they say there is no need for a cooling drive shower and if they thought the drives needed cooling Mercury would engineer a drive shower into the drive. Also notice that any of the new drives that have come out in the past few years do not have a drive shower. Mercury does not even offer a shower as an accessory. |

Re: Bravo 1 Drive Showers
Never had any white chaulking on my last 2 boats before the shower install, but installed them anyways. I like the looks of them. :D
I only use the Simrek Halos. Seen 1st hand how much water is forced on the drives. Such a simple peice of hardware. Polished them to a mirror finish before installing them though. |
Re: Bravo 1 Drive Showers
Don't be so cheap, you already spent a 100 grrr on the boat can"t hurt !!
|
Re: Bravo 1 Drive Showers
Yes for sure it is cheap insurance, heat kills... :)

Re: Bravo 1 Drive Showers
On the flip side, if Merc thought they were needed but didn't install them, they would be gambling on waranty claims.

Re: Bravo 1 Drive Showers
Been boating since 90. Only experience is we put on a set for free and it slowed our race boat down 2 MPH. took them off and got the 2 back. Never had a problem racing for 6 years without them and have a 29 with twin 502s and a 35 with 525s and NEVER had a problem. Roger

Re: Bravo 1 Drive Showers
I used to boat and ride sleds with Paul the owner of Simrick drive showers. We use them on all our boats. They work great. I can put you in touch with him if you need one.

Re: Bravo 1 Drive Showers
I had Simrek on a 29 Fever HP500 package and it worked great for well over 200hrs. As soon as I put the Simrek on it got ride of the white chauly residue on my drive so I know it was running cooler.
