29 w/500 EFI and a Procharger?
I'm thinking of buying a procharger for my 29. I have the 500 EFI. Just curious about a few things. 1) What will this do to my planning ability 2) Gas Mileage?? 3) What type of headaches will I have with this set-up. Any help would be great!
Oh yeah, what size prop should I spin? Thanks |
PM hp500s. He had prochargers on his 500efis.

Bought the boat used and only had them for 20-25 hrs before they were pulled. Some dumbazz has them now! :drink: . (since I didn't have these long, get other opinions from people with more experience....below are my thoughts) With the Procharger you will need to run a bigger prop which may effect the ability to stay on plane at low speed. I had the 8 PSI systems and the props were so big (34P) that it would blow out getting on plane so I'd have to be careful then. If you stick with the 5 PSI system you shouldn't have these problems and still gain over 10MPH. Fuel burn on mine (again 8 PSI) was pretty bad. It may have been the fuel curve that it was setup with but I feel like I was getting .8-.9 mpg when I should have been seeing 1.3 with that hull. You'll probably go up 1 size, if your slightly under proped now you might jump 2. IE: If you run a 28 now, you'll likely need a 30, slight chance of a 32. |
I have a 01' 35 Lightning that did have 500EFI's with Procharger's running 5 LBS of boost. The boat was pretty fast I never got it exactly dialed in because one motor blew a head gasket and scored the deck of the block. The motors only had 80 HRS when this happened. I would suggest the Whipple kit because they can be tuned more precise and feel they are safer.

Dont worry t550hps...You will still be able to outrun a FEW single engine fountains... |
I'd throw Whipple into the mix. Ours have been nothing but reliable.

I had a Vortech on my 02 29 with 500 EFI. It hit 86 with a 30 Bravo 1. Search this forum for the build up. It also ran in the low 80's with a 28 Maximus till the XZ let loose. Midrange cruise was fantastic. I still have the Maximus' (LH and RH).
I can tell you that the Vortech is very integrated with the 500EFI and ran good right out of the box. I did a rebuild before the install and I doubt that 500EFI would have survived without head gaskets. Good luck, F |
