35 Lightning speeds with HO's

Any idea what kind of speed you would see from a 2001-2006 35 Lighting (twin step) ? Wide open and cruise (3,500 rpm)? I know the new 35 is advertised in the low 90's with 496 HO's. Thanks in advance!

techman 04-29-2007 06:19 PM

I have a 2006 with XR's that does 79MPH WOT.

crb76 04-29-2007 10:56 PM

I have a 2000 Lightning Classic (same as an Executioner), has 1 step and HP500EFI's top speed is 85 mph with 30P Bravo 1 4 blade props at 4900 rpm, cruise at 3400 rpm is 55 mph.

Thanks for the replies! Interesting that there is not much if any top speed difference between a lightning and an executioneer equipped with 496 HO's. Based on information in this thread and others they both seem to run 78-80.

Yeah, I would have thought the twin step would be a little faster, maybe 80 - 81 GPS.

techman 04-30-2007 01:33 PM

I think my XR's probably rob me of about 1mph possibly two. Executioners with 496 do run slower. More like 74-75, not upper 70's and certainly not over 80. JHutch (board member) has the same boat as I except with B1X's and I think he has seen just a hair over 80. I have 1.50 gears and 28P B1's props (not labbed).

(David's classic lightning has 500's not 496's)

INDY27 04-30-2007 03:03 PM

A good freind of mine here has a 06 35 Ex that consistently runs 77-78 with a 496/Bravo 1.65 ratio turning stock bravo 32's.

35 fountain 05-01-2007 06:08 PM

2004 35x 496 HOs 1.65 gears, 32 stock Bravo 1s 110 gallons of gas 2 people 79+ with the tachs at 5400, lites on the dash with beepers going off(last weekend). Could have trimed it in a little and held it a little longer and she will hit 80+ on the gps speedo. Now if you fill it up in the middle of summer on a hot muggy day and put 4 fat chicks on it she will only hit 75.

Hi All,
Have a 35X with 525efi's and XR Drives that has hit 88.3 on GPS...(once) Will run 86-87 everyday.... It's for sale too. 80 hrs. On boattrader.com Chesterfield Mi.

GCAT911 06-25-2007 04:26 PM

I have an 06 35 light with 496HO with 140hours. light on fuel and an glass sea she will do just over 81 mph.

Mackattack 06-25-2007 08:25 PM

I was in the 02' 35 lightning t/s with stock 500's at 85+mph on the speedo. It was reading a little above that, not sure what props. Might be a good race with Dkahnjob and his single step with 500s.

I should clarify one thing, my speedo is not a gps, but is the factory Lavorsi pitot type speedometer. I assume that it is accurate, but who knows.

Borrow a handheld GPS as there is a BIG difference. I would bet your WOT 85 speedo indication is very generous.

I would skip the handheld gps, you and your friends will stay much much happier looking at pitot tube speedo numbers! :D On a couple of my Fountains' the speedo would read 6-8 mph happy, depending on trim angle. If you ever noticed, in the Fountain brochures their advertised speeds on the 29 with a 525 dropped from "80+ mph" to "near 80" when the gps speedo became standard, if I remember correctly. I have most of the brochures and thought that it was rather "interesting" to see that.

That is interesting, I think I will just stay blissfully ignorant, and be careful of who I race!

Rebel_Heart 07-17-2007 11:21 PM

I had a gps installed. Big difference.

Slumpbuster 07-18-2007 09:01 PM

how much difference did you see.

Rebel_Heart 07-18-2007 11:42 PM

I found my stock speedo was about 3 mph happy with 502s.

bob_t 07-19-2007 08:54 AM

Take a look at Powerboat's online review of the 2001 29 Fever with 575SCI. In the performance summary it lists gps: 81, radar: 83, speedometer: 88 :D On our 35 twin step, liquid filled speedo was rather accurate with drives trimmed around 2-3, and about up to 65 mph. Once you got the drives around 4-5, the speedo read 90 and gps read 84 (good reason to leave gps home). On both of our 29's, the liquid filled speedo is accurate between ~ 30 - 50 mph, but is about 4-6 happy over 70 mph. It seems that the further you trim the drive, the more "off" the speedo is. On our 292 Formula that had twin 6.2's and no mechanical trim indicators  , the gaffrig pitot speedo was off by 8 mph when trimmed out at top speed. 70 mph on gps showed 77 - 78, bouncing on the speedo :D

jmeng 07-19-2007 11:15 AM

My dad's 35 Fountain had the only speedo that I've ever seen read SLOW. At cruising speeds (maybe 35 - 60) it read about 5 mph slower than the gps. At top end it was very close, maybe only 1 or 2 mph happy. This was with a 2000 Classic.

Hey Bob, how you liking the new Fountain so far?

Slumpbuster 07-19-2007 02:57 PM

I will take a GPS out next time I go on that 02' T/S 35 fountain lightning with 500hp's all stock.

The over/under is set at 83.

What do you take. Also include (read in Alec Trebec voice) whats your wager.

For one beer at LOTTO, if i go, I take over.

Purple Stuff, any comment you've ridden in that boat. With Texoma closed it may be a while before it's out.
