Windshield 35 2001 lightning
Anyone ever take the windshield off, I have a 2001 35 Lightning with
bubbles on the powder coating. I've been told paint is better. Does the windshield come off or will I never get the thing back on once I start removing it? |
Windshield
It is a big job. I understand (and may be wrong) if once off, near impossible to relign the holes. I had a shorty put on mine-it was difficult for a seasoned guy (my mech) who had done it several times before. A friend did his on a 2001 35-same issue, bubbling powdercoat and painted it in awlgrip. Has had it on for one season here and holding well. My 1 yr. old NEW shorty is bubbling.

So, did your friend remove the windshield or paint on the boat?, I have had both methods recommended by boat yards. Maybe part of the windshield comes off? I just see taking one screw out and having the whole thing unravel like a cartoon then driving the only
flat deck no windshield fountain 35 . |
Just be warned, I have a whited-out windscreen and cannot see out of the boat unless constantly standing in the bolsters. I am 6' and when sitting, cannot see. This is only a onconvience when I want to relax and just go for a leisurely cruise. I tried sitting on the PFD like a booster seat:rolleyes: :D , but that still isn't tall enough.
I did sit on one of my fenders last weekend, and that was tall enough! NO comments here, please...:D :p Of course, this is no issue if you are talking aout the frame around a windshield compared to the smoked windscreen! |

He removed it and cried how much of a pain it is to R/R. Same words echoed by my mechanic when I went to a shorty w.s. They both said it was difficult. I tthink it looks great on mine-but now tasked with removing and refinishing after 1 YEAR

I have an 06 35 Lightening. Had to have the windsheild frame
replaced due to bubbling under the powder coating within a year of the purchase (warranty). South Austin marine did the work. Had to remove the old frame, reglass all old holes and fit and drill for new holes. It was quite a job, took at least 4 days for two guys. All turned out well and new frame appears to be ageing fine. |
Count me in on this one too. Bubbling/Corrosion on 2006 shorty on a 35 lightning. Everyone I have spoken too says don't touch it until it becomes really bad. The repair is a nightmare as noted by others.
Currently touching up the bad spots with light sanding and a coat of white appliance enamel paint. Poor design.....:( |
I saw some very slight bubbling under the powder coat the
day I picked up my 35 from the dealer. The boat had just been built a month prior . The problom became worse very quickly. Fountain did own up to it. They said that the preperation of the metal prior to the poweder coating was causing the problom. |
