Insurance, how much?
I live/boat Galveson Bay/Upper Texas coast. I run an 06 Lightning with twin 496HO, agreed upon value of 185k, costs me 1650 a year. Progressive told me that if I exceded 1000HP (ie twin525) the cost would blossom to 3700+ a year, thats if
they would even extend coverage on bigger hp? I am also no doubt paying a premium for living/boating in hurricane teritory. I have a 25 year claimless boating history with boats worth 20K-500K and I also hold a capt license. Trying to get an idea of what other parts of the country are paying. I am thinking about stepping up to bigger boat with bigger HP but the cost of insurance may be a deal breaker |
my old 1995 35 is 650 yr.

I have a 2000 35' Classic with HP500EFI's and it is insured with Allstate, stated value is $115K on the boat @ $714 per year and $10K on the trailer for $202 per year. This is in California and I have 45 years experience.

But you don't have to carry coverage of the boat actually IN the water!!! :D

Progressive won't insure anything over 500....They "insured" my 525's until I found out they can't.

My 05 Lightning with 525's is insured through Liberty Mutual for $173,000 with a yearly premium of $2700. This is based on less than 3 years boating experience. Prior to the Lightning purchase, I had them quote an 04 Sonic 31SS with 496HO's valued at $105,000 with a yearly premium of $1500.
The agent stated the only reason they are insuring my Lightning is because I have my home owner's, auto, and personal umbrella policy with them. |
Call Total Dollar Insurance in New York. They specialize in high performance boat insurance and are excellent brokers. I'm insuring my new Fountain with them and they got a policy for 1/2 of what Boat US wanted to charge. Sy Goldberg is the broker. He is outstanding. Find it on Google.

1999 35' Light, 500HP's, triaxle trailer, insured value at 130K...
Safeco insurance charges 900.00 / year with 2% deduct. Carder |
My concern with cheaper premiums/smaller carriers is what happens when claim time comes. YOU GET WHAT U PAY FOR
in the insurance biz. like most of us I would prefer to have insurace and never need it! But if a claim does occure I would like to have the piece of mind in knowing that I am doing bussiness with a lagit company. |
Insurance companies big or small are in business to make MONEY, piece of mind doesn't exsist, they make money by not giving it to you the policy holder. when you get sued they don't even have to pay to fight for you, they can walk away and make you sue them.

Safeco insurance charges 900.00 / year with 2% deduct. Carder You better do some double checkin' quick. I was going to go through SAFECO with the EXACT same boat. They quoted me the exact same numbers two weeks before going to pick up my boat. All was good until I got ready to go pick it up, bank release the money. All of sudden, they couldn't find my policy and had misplaced everything they quoted me. They re-submitted only to have SAFECO say they don't insure these boats at those speeds. Then, they trying to "gig" me a cancellation fee:angry-smiley-055: Zack |
I am looking at a new 08 38Lightning with stag 525. We are close to the right numbers on the boat. However, the insurance may be a deal breaker. The best I can find is 6300 a year with NO WINDSTORM coverage. Marine Underwriters offers windstorm with a 3% deduct for a wopping 12K. The insuarnce companies are slowly bleeding us dry down here on the Gulf Coast. we are paying more and getting less!

country where you boat the GULF COAST was not on the list. everybody is afraid of a little wind Thanks |

2005 42' Ex w 525's, Inland Water, 3 month lay up, 20yrs boating exp, only owned one other boat (1997 32' Fever) prior to the 42' ......$1400 per year with American Family

There was a person that stated what he paid for his boat for insurance on this thread and then I looked at his Avatar and saw he said his boat had WHIPPLES. Not a good idea to say what your boat is isured for, then BOAST about what modification you have done to the boat. Some isurance companies scan websites.

I love boating on the inland lakes, you guys pay much less
with regard to insurance. over the past 2-3 years all the insurance companies down here on the gulf coast are worried. It not only affects our boats but are houses and business to. If you live within 25 miles of the water(that means inland bays) your home/business will end up in the state windstorm pool. Their fore, I will start Lobbying the state and push for a windstorm pool for boats (yea right). The insurance companies are minimizing their risk/exposure at the same time increasing costs and we are paying more and getting LESS. Lord only knows whats going to happen if/when claim time comes around! |

Empower out of AZ says they will write on the GULF COAST.
To cover an 08 38 Fountain with 525s will be 5552.00. This Includes WINDSTORM, but the windstrom comes with a 14K deductable and you must have a written H-cain plan. It is an agreed upon value of 280K and 7K on the trailer. Covers water from South TX to South FL. Much better but its still a chunk of change. Dont think theirs much better out their |
