27' Fever 496 HO - Raylar

I have an '02 27'Fever with a 496 HO; I am seriously considering the Raylar engine upgrade, at present I have the Dana Marine Flowtorque exhaust installed. I would like any input on performance increases and possible cruising and top end performance increaces. Also any good or bad luck with the Raylar equipment. Thanks

Probably 8 or 9 mph boost with the HO525. I would expect the cruise speed to jump about 5 mph....

Ray @ Raylar builds a nice kit. They are reliable & low maint.. If you dont want to go boost then I would go that route.. If you dont mind boost then for your model year Procharger & whipple both make kits for it. Even though we prefer procharger on a lot of earlier stuff, I really like the whipple on the 496 engines..

BTW: we sell & install all 3 items I mentioned & they all will grab you some good power and give you more speed.. :)

Raylar kit + Fountain 496 = a big kick for a decent buck!

Petesflht:

The Raylar BCK103 kit along with your Dana Marine exhaust will give you right at about 560HP at the crank which is about 10-15 more than a HP525 with about 25 ft/lbs more torque. You will need to re-prop most likely 2-3 inches in pitch but Fountains are fast boats and the added power should get you 8-10 mph once everything is dialed in and your cruise speed should improve very nicely. The Raylar equipped 496 is still naturally aspirated and the reliability you will have and the ability to still run 87 octane should make your future boating a lot of fun and still more economical at the gas pumps!
Let me know how we can help with your plans, the kits are in stock.

Best Regards,

Ray @ Raylar

I have the same set-up on a 04 model 27 Fever and would love to see how this goes before I do my upgrade. I dont know if you are running a 1.65 drive but that means you will have to turn a 30 plus prop after the upgrades unless you do a gear swap. I worry about docking with a 32 pitch. Whats top your top speed in stock form

I am running 1:5 gears with the stock Bravo 1 26" prop, am at 1100' above sea level, run about 68 at 5000 RPM's.

thats what I run.....68.6 gps in somewhat sticky water, two guys, 1/4 fuel

fountain27ho496 11-12-2007 10:07 AM

At least there consistant. Best of 68.5 GPS, 1.5, 26p. Over 400 hours, still runs the same. JC

tblrklakemo 11-12-2007 10:25 AM

So who is going to do the raylar?

flying J 11-12-2007 10:59 AM

My boat only runs 65-66ish best with 20 gallons 2 people then with 4 people it only runs 60ish. Is that the same with you guys? Do you lose that much speed with 2 more people? Have you pulled the turbulators out of the exhaust? Are you running labbed props?

I'm sure some one has a late model 27 that has done the Raylar We'll just have to wait for them to chime in

flying J 11-12-2007 11:22 AM

Sorry Petesflh I didnt see the stock 26 prop part.

But still I dont see what I'm missing I wonder when Fountain started going to 1.65 and 28 pitch props and why?

If I knew my boat would run 77 after the Raylar kit I would probably pull the trigger.

Yes, i pulled the turbulators. And yes there is a noticable difference the more people I add. Only had the GPS with me once for the top speed run so I couldnt get you accurate speeds with more people and fuel....i would guess low to mid 60's......not very fountain'ish if you ask me.

We picked up a kit from Ray yesterday...We will give an update on the 27fever real soon...it has a 28p w/1.65 gears. we are anticapting going to a 30p. we should have it installed and tested within 2 weeks. Currently the boat will hit 70 with a light load and we do run in saltwater.

Good luck. Did you get the HO525 kit?

Yes

i dont think youll see 77 with 550 / 570 hs its going to take more than that , my 27 fountain 598 725 hs 770 tq runs at 84 at 5400 although non stepped hull 1.36 24 pitch with labbing will increase to maybe 57 5800 perfect !

I bet he gets 77 with the right prop. Pretty hard to compare a stepped hull to a non.

flying J 12-13-2007 10:27 AM

A 30 Pitch  I hate to think about what docking is going to be like. I guess it might just take some getting use to.

I think if the boat hits 67-68 now it will go close to 77 dialed in with the right prop. Please let us know the results. How soon will the install take place?

Westcoast 12-13-2007 10:30 AM

What is so hard about docking with a 30p prop??the thing already manuvers like chit around the dock. I don't see how it would be any worse.

We are pulling the engine out this weekend

bob_t 12-13-2007 11:27 AM

I dock my 29 Fever single engine (575SCi) with a 30P Bravo 1 and sometimes a 32P Bravo 1 prop (1.5 gear ratio) several times, every time we use the boat. Never have/had a problem. Just pop it in/out of gear to control movement and speed. What makes it so hard? Wind gives me more problems than anything else when trying to dock a single engine boat of that length

I pop mine in and out of reverse like you are talking about.
My problem is countering against the wind. I live in Oklahoma and it never stops. I guess I just need more practice or maybe more beer :D
