Golden, nice boat but want a 42 twin engine.

sommerfliesby 05-09-2009 08:41 AM

I thought that was a Chicago boat? I seem to remember it from some CPC video somewhere along the line...? When I was looking to move up (an urge that has quelled itself with the battered economy), that boat was on my short list. In fact, I drove up there to see it one Saturday only to arrive after closing time! I think it's a great looking ride...Bob Z down here on the southside had a 35 with the same 20th Anniversary graphics...I'd just have gotten ride of that tall windshield. There is a SLIGHT chance I'll be going up to Shogren this afternoon (I'm looking at a Corvette in Waukegan and might be able to talk my wife into a stopover)...if I do, I'll check it out for ya.

Roger 05-09-2009 08:55 AM

sommerfliesby, I have a 07 ZO-6 with 2300 miles for sale wholesale if interested. Roger

Figued it out...Chicago powerboat club
are the videos on here?

acaruso 05-10-2009 06:23 PM

500HP's need valve springs at 200to250 hours I learned that the hard way:eek:

sommerfliesby 05-10-2009 07:57 PM

Tcuda...I did end up checking her out for ya... Greg at Shogren was kind enough to follow me around their MASSIVE showroom with a mop-and-bucket as I couldn't keep my mouth closed...WOW the new place is awesome...it's like the ultimate boat show only all go-fasts!

I learned that is boat is NOT the one I was thinking of previously...it IS a saltwater boat. The trailer looks a little rough (surface rust, I believe), and the vinyl on the sunpad and the backs of the bolsters is a little stained...nothing major. There's a ding in the rubrail on the starboard stern, and a small gouge right under the bow eye, but other than that, the hullsides looked clean. Below deck was about perfect...very clean. Engine compartment was clean, and tight with that genset in there!

Let me know if you have any other questions, I'll try to remember any other details you may have inquiries on.

Thanks to Greg @ Shogren for the help...and for letting me sneak a peek at that gorgeous Top Gun...my wife LOVED the cabin in that thing...who knows what could happen now....?

Roger...thanks for the heads-up, but we're looking at C5 coupes....I think we found what we're after...hopefully making a deal this week!

RoughKnight 05-10-2009 11:36 PM

I have a couple c5's for sale about 10 min away from shogren let me know if any of mine could work for you.

Thanks Sommerfliesby,
Sounds like you really enjoyed yourselfes there... Scott said it was a brackish/salt boat,Doesn't sound like I should worry much. One guy here on OSO said Fountains are known to spider crack there gel coat expecially in the oceans whith bigger seas than lakes???? Is that true and was there any evidence of that on the 42? This will be my first Fountain, haven't seen it yet but working on the deal as we speak. If everthing goes as planned I might take a quick flight there to check it out. Will I be dissapionted? I know its a used boat so I expect to so some wear and tear but I dont want a garbage barge. Sounds to me Scott doesn't sell to much crap.
Satisfied1, I'm workind a trade with Shogren but would def. like to have EFI.Unless you want a 38 express cruiser........???
The deal is pretty much locked up tight with Shogren so I'll have to pass, but thanks.

I have run my Fountain 35 in both lakes and ocean, there is not a spider crack or any gel coat flaw on the boat anywhere. Fountains are as solid as they come.

satisfied1 05-11-2009 11:19 PM

No problem good luck and enjoy your new ride.

Can't say that I looked all that hard for cracks, but like Kahn said, I have yet to find ANY on my boat...and believe me when I tell you that Lake Michigan can get a bit rough...as can Lake of the Ozarks (which is where it lived before it followed me home). Personally, I don't think you'll be disappointed. And no, there's not a lot of "crap" in that showroom for sure! Good luck, hope it works out for you.

Personally, I think carbs are better than EFI on boats. The fuel burn difference seems undetectable. The difference is in the COST TO FIX IT.

EFI is very difficult to troubleshoot. Boats, unlike cars, WILL HAVE PROBLEMS.

Carbs are very easy to trouble shoot, and very easy and cheap to fix if anything goes wrong.

On boats, most of the money goes to the cost of repairs and maintenance.
The second biggest chunk is the fuel.
The third is the purchase price (the payments).
The big fourth is insurance.
And storage is a bit of coin for some people.

So I think that 42, with staggered, carb big blocks, is probably a real good one for the cost to repair and maintain.

Personally, I'd do two things right away with that boat:

1) Replace the head with a vacuflush, with an overboard macerator.

The problem with the head in that boat is that it uses a LOT of water to flush. That means the holding tank fills up fast. And worse, it pushes the waste with a LOT of pressure, so the plastic holding tank can (will) burst when it gets full. Give some girls beer to drink, and you'll soon have sewage all over.

A complete vacuflush system will cost about $5K. Best $5K you'll ever spend on the boat.

2) Replace the V-berth with a real mattress. http://www.boatbeds.com/ built the one for my boat. Its more comfortable than home! About $1500 or $2000, but you'll find you'll use the boat a LOT more.

tcuda499 05-12-2009 02:20 PM

Thanks everbody!!! I really apprieceate all the advice. I have a deposit on the boat and cant wait to get her home:evilb:

tcuda499 05-12-2009 06:06 PM

one more thing, what size is the holding tank and can I just add a macerator/overboard discharge?

sommerfliesby 05-12-2009 07:29 PM

Watch the laws concerning that...I know around here if you are caught with a functioning overboard discharge, they stick you with a MONSTER fine. We just pee in a bucket and dump it overboard!

tcuda499 05-12-2009 07:59 PM

Ya,I think its a new law here to.Just curious though.

mcraymond3 05-12-2009 08:46 PM

Great looking boat! I had a 99 42ft Lightning with 500 carbs and Patriot graphics. I loved the boat!!! Congrats on the new boat.

tcuda499 05-13-2009 06:09 AM

thanks mcraymond3, I wish it had the patriot graphics.what did you get for fuel consumption if you remember? thanks

Wildman_grafix 05-13-2009 07:36 AM

Don't forget the valve train will need to be rebuilt on those HP500's around 250 hours.
Loaded boat, looks good.

carcrash 05-13-2009 05:11 PM

Pretty trivial to hide the overboard macerator system. Its not illegal to use one most places, just some places. Where it's illegal to use, you just need a way to prevent it from being used, like a lock on the thru-hull handle.

You really want it so you never have to hassle with sh*t (literally).

JayFan 05-18-2009 12:11 PM

Is this boat sold???? It was "Deal Pending" however now it is not?????

tcuda499 05-18-2009 07:04 PM

yes,I have a deposit on it. Maybe a mistake??? I just talked to Shogren today.I will find out.

JayFan 06-08-2009 09:25 PM

Can I ask what happened......is this great looking boat still for sale....I thought it was a done deal???
