51' Fountain
Does any one know the 51' Lightining for sale at Waterworks yard, immediately south east of Pier 121 on Lake Lewisville? I'm thinking about buying the boat but I am concerned with not knowing its history.

I saw it yesterday. It is a triple ... not sure what. Direct drive. I only walked around it so I can't comment on interior condition ... hull looked good.
|
I also understand only three were built. Not sure if that is 51 model or the direct drive version.

51 is a 47 with arneson surface drives. They have been on and off eBay and classifieds many times. They apparently are exhaustively expensive to keep running but perform great when they are.

Cool looking boat, any more pictures of it?

I remember seeing one of these at the Cincinnati Fountain dealer back around 99-2000. The back reminded me of the 50 hustler that I went and looked at because of the large integrated swim platform.

The 51' was tested by 'Yachts' with triple 600hp Innovation engines and reached 89mph with six people on board and nearly 75% load capacity.

The 51 never really worked out. It was a little faster power for power than the 47 but it wouldn't turn right and was unsafe. I believe there were only 3 ever built. Jordan tried and tried back then to get me to order one. I'm glad that I stuck with my 47 at the time after seeing and hearing all the bad. It seems like that boat was at the Miami show in 98 or 99, hard to remember back that far for sure.
|
So I Also heard only 3 made and why because they didn't work. My friend has one of them out here in San Diego I took a ride and getting on plane she would rock port to starboard for a bit then it would run great but I thought it was an aweful feeling, "why is it doing that" went though my head. Funny thing is it has the same checkered pattern as the one in the pior photos I thought it was my friends when I first looked at it. I did notice that center motor is way down inside the blidge.
