Has Anyone tried to Run Over 100 in a 35
Just wondering if anyone has tried to run the new staggered 35 Lightnings over 100mph. I understand they will run 100-102 with 525 power, but I am wondering about maybe 110? What would this take and is it stable enough to be safe? I have run 100mph in a 20 footer, how scary can 110 in a 35 be? Thanks.

:evilb:Tried:boat:4 people 35' staggered 103!

XCpilot there's a new 35 with 6's & 600's in it, had 700's From the factory, I believe the # was like 128 Kelly O on here has it now I'm sure he'll chime in eventually with the real details

The Strictly Business Super Vee runs 110 with 525s

I think the better question should be does anyone not want to try to get there 35 over 100.

I don't see any reason not to myself. Mine in the low 90's is on a rail in a stiff wind chop, very predictable and never gets out of shape. Any hull has a speed at which it becomes a real handfull, but 100+ is not at the limit on either of the current 35' Fountain hulls. I have been over 100 in two single step, EX style, boats and both were real solid at 105 - 108. Have a friend that has a side by side twin step that has run into the mid/upper teens with no handling issues. The newer full staggered set ups are said to be even better handling boats. I'll let Kelly make comments on his new 35 600 boat with six drives, but my take would be that set up would handle like a dream over 100 mph. If I'm lucky I will find out how well it handles the speed this comming summer. Hint, Hint Kelly!!! :D |
Here is a canopy video of our 38 at about 110mph. You can see the chime walk at around 103-105, but the boat just drives right thru it. The 35' SV is right along side of us to the right.

I've have been on "Party On" @ well over 100+ and the hull ran very well at that speed.

Of course it did, it's a Fountain! It's what they do best. |

Reading other posts it sounds like the unsafe limit is somewhere north of 120. Think I'll move forward with my plan of powering up my 35, after I get some seat time in it at 100. :drink:
In my mind how safe a hull is at any given speed is just as dependent on the skill, experience level, and attitude of the operator as it is on the hull design. I've been with guys that made me think twice about being in their boat with them at the controls at speeds far less than 100. Nothing wrong with running close to the edge, real key is knowing when not to. |
Ok xcpilot, now we are going to need some PICS !!
Ragged, you will get your wish at some point I am sure. I really do not think it would be worth the time or fuel to pull up next to any of the T-Birds, except for laughs !!:evilb: |
We had a 2000 Lightning 35, non-staggered with standard length drives. Old school technology compared to todays hulls. With whippled 540's the boat ran 104 mph. Non-labbed props, spinning 4 blade Hydromotives with 1.36 gears. The boat never did anything unpredictable, nor did it scare folks that had never been that fast on the water before that wanted to say they ran over 100 in a boat. What ever "safe is" usually has more to do with the person behind the wheel and on the sticks. Fountain will push a hull/drive combination well past the limits of most consumers. If there is a problem its usually fixed before the boat is put on the market.

Kelly, can you please post pics of your transom and drives. Just bought sixs for my 35.
Supercharged 557 cu in motors that should be making around 1100 hp. |

Here is a shot. Remember, this is a staggered set-up.

Thanks for the pics...do you have a strait on side shot. I am curious to see if they look oversized on the boat.

Couch Racin, here is a shot from side. I do not think the drives look too big at all, just makes the Bravos look too small ! |
Nice looking ride, Kelly. Educated guess says it came from

I am a service consultant here at Legendary Marine. We are in te middle of repowering a 35 stag/525 set up with the 700's and 6's. ONce completed, I will give the numbers we are able to acheive. Brian mentioned at the factory they tested Kelly O' originally with the NXT drives on it but it was to squirly. WHat type of speed's did you see Kelly O before you put the 600's back in it?

With the 700s the boat would run mid to high 120s!
I bought boat after 700's were removed and 600's were installed. Ran 108 with 600's. Apparently with 700's and #6's it got loose over 120 so they added 1"spacers to drives and put limiters on tab cylinders so could not free boat up enough to run over 120, to make it safe enough to deliver to original owner. |

Well, I am anxious to see the real weight diffrence between the 3's and 6's. The inner transom plate is smaller on the 6, the steering rams, etc...
Someone could have a really nice set up on a 650-700hp boat. We have the transmissions, inner transom plates, freshly rebuilt drives with 0 hours, props, steerling pums, brackets, etc.... half the price of a new set of 6's. This 35 ran 98 with about 700hp, 1.5's, 17.5 x 28 props. http://inlinethumb05.webshots.com/44...600x600Q85.jpg |
We are flying out tomorrow to Az and meeting the driver with my 35 Lightning on Friday :evilb: Can't wait to get her on the water! Just two more sleeps!
