28 Skater to 42 Staggered

Thinking of moving from my 28 Skater to a 38 or 42 with staggered 525`s,( wife wants a cabin with more comforts). Who has one here?.How fast can be expected with 525 staggered? I used to have a 1988 10Meter about 15 years ago, loved the boat except when I ran in Rough Water /Big Seas the cabin would come apart.Does this happen on newer modles?

2004 or so with staggered 525 EFI's runs 80 mph in my area. I have a 1993 triple 525 SC boat and the cabin looks like new. I've ran the boat to 78 GPS, Fountain paper work says 86.

first off the skate is a great boat. the later models 38 will run early to uper 90's depending on setup. and will not let you down handling wise in comparison to the skater, within reason of course. plenty of room in the cockpit and cabin. the 42 is nice also but will run early to mid 90's. handling also good but may leave you yearning for more due to the small power,525's. great for bigger water with the family. either choice will due just fine, but i feel the 38 will be the best all around for a small performance oriented family.

My son has a 28 Skater with 300 pro max's that I have some seat time in, and I have a 38 Fountain/ 700's. If you like the speed and acceleration of the Skater, a 525 38, or 42 may take a little getting used too. On the other hand if you dont mind slowing down a little, either one are great boats. Just wont accelerate like the Skater. It also depends on how big of water you boat in. The 42 is a wave crusher. The 38 staggered boat's cockpit is really about the same size as the 35 Fountain, the cabin and the swim pad are a little bigger though.

any staggered 42 stepped hull is my favorite.

42's with 525's run 85...at least the 3 dozen or so ones up here do. With the 600's you'll tickle 90.

600's light fuel (none) just me w/ Herrings ran 93 (06)

Beak Boater 07-14-2010 04:43 PM

Had a 38/600 boat, it ran 93 very light load, with Maximus props. 90 any other day of the week. Thats why I bought the 38/700 boat!! You owned a Fountain before, so you know this but it wont hop like a 28 Skater until you get to around 70, Im sure you will miss that!!!

Back4More 07-14-2010 04:56 PM

Fastest 600 42 I've seen was a friends 07 Ex that ran 91 with -2 Sportmasters and 5 blade Herrings.

It was fast. Also had sportmasters. Cash Bar and I saw at least 95 out of a 42 PR w/ 525's. THAT was impressive.

I rode on a 42 PR/600s and ran 90...full of fuel and 4 fat guys.

What are you refering to "hop" .... accelerate hard ? yes it will be a hard decision, will have to do alot of research/ rides. My Skater right now will out accelerate most any "big" powered V on the lake up to 100.It is hard to go slower, however I would have alot more useable boat.
A perfect world I would have both and a center console too:)

offshoresteve 07-14-2010 10:40 PM

What about the cabin ? Does it stay together when you pound the **** out of the boat in Real Rough water( Atlantic or rough Gulf, not rough lake water).Like I stated before that was my Only dislike of my 10 Meter.

blownincome 07-15-2010 05:16 AM

42 is a wave crusher I asked Reggie once what his favorite boat they ever built he said 2, 10 meter cause it put them on the map and the 42 best overall his ride of choice!

meant mid 80's on the 42

Throttle Fever 07-17-2010 08:17 PM

My 04 runs low mid 90's w/600's. With the cooler full and stereo blasting. Hard to beat, straight out of the box. And it will do it all day and in any water (something you won't do in a 28 skater). Now compare like for like (larger Skater). Skater is a awsome boat, just doesn't have the cabin comfort.

He means the fountain of course won't hop in the midrange like our 28s

Mine only porpises 60 -70 in calm water only

RaggedEdge 07-20-2010 07:11 PM

Two entirely different boats. Both are just about as good as it gets in their respective class.

The cabin on our 1993 is still perfect. I love the lines in the water too.
