Its hard to tell, does it mount to the rail or to the boat? and if the wire doesnt pull out of the bottom of the antenne what do you do with it when your not using it? or does it stay up all the time? I appriciate the input because Im trying as hard as I can to NOT drill any holes in the boat.........Doug

Doug, the base is 2 pcs that clamp around the upright post of the railing. The top half lifts out as shown by the 3rd picture and I just lay it in the engine compartment when trailering. The wire feeds thru the center and then out the backside of the top half of the mount. The top half is all one pc. I machined it all as you see it, with the threads of the mount for the ant also part of the mount. It is al polished aluminum.
I just raise the hatch, slide the top assembley into the bottom half, close hatch. Done I also didn't like any of the store bought ones. Too gawldy, or needed drilled holes. Or they were so big that they would have interfered with my cockpit cover or the hatch. If you notice, I made this one to stay below the horizontal railing to keep from rubbing my cockpit cover. |
ok NOW i get it, VERY VERY cool!!!....let me guess....your a machinist and you whipped that up in a couple of minutes while talkin on the phone and havin' a butt..........Doug

Ever thought of selling them? Very nice piece! Daryl

Where did you mount the radio, the Fountain dash isnt very friendly to mounting accesories...........Doug
|
The radio is mounted sideways under the dash to the left of the drivers leg. Kinda of a pain, but out of the weather and outta sight. But then I only use it as a walkie talkie with our friends.
yeah, I'm a machinist. Tool & Die Maker to be exact. I spend more time making custom parts for my boat than I do for job related stuff. ;) I doubt I could sell any, price would be way to high. Very hard to compete with the cheap plastic $20 ones. I have probably around 6-8 hrs in it, but it was a design as I went. 1st ones always take twice the time to make. But then I'm sure this design would be perfect for many people. No holes, very simple to use, and small. Without the antenna installed, the base is hardly noticable. That is what I was going after. Thanks for compliments. Jerry |
