Looking at a 42 Lightning, Part 2

I was discussing a local boat that I looked at, with a very knowledgeable friend. I told him there was oil in the bilge and there was a green puddle under the drive fluid reservoir bottle. I was just thinking the bottle had a leak. He said that sometimes when Bravo drives have very worn bearings, they build up pressure and push the drive fluid back into the bottle, where it overflows into the bilge. Anyone that can confirm or deny?

Thats pretty easy to detect, either it is

a.overflowing
b.leaking out of the old style clear bottle
c.sloppy refill job.

I have never heard about the bearing deal.but I am not claiming to have seen everything either

If they are run hard and on plane for a while and there are no drive showers it can overheat the oil.It will then expand and blow out of the bottle.

They also can leak at the fitting at the inside of the gimbal housing

They can also simply leak at the hose connection to the bottle: make sure its screwed on tightly.

One time after getting the boat back from one of our most prestigious and famous shops in Southern California, I found similar goop in the bilge, and was able to track it down to joint from the hose to the bottle. By simply twisting it on firmly, the leak stopped permanently.

Its probably due to a crummy mechanic. Most of them are idiots.
