mirrored engine hatches

just wonder what you think of mirrored underside of engine hatches,if so would you use mirror plex or any other ideas or should I leave them natural. thanks in advance for your replies. also any pictures would help.

Personally, I would do some 304 stainless mirror finish. With the plexiglass, you really need to be carefull on what cleaners you use. The stainless will definetly be more cost prohibitive but will last longer and the shine will be outstanding!!!

Where do you buy the flexible mirror stuff? I've been told it works very well installed with velcro but I can't find it. I definitely am a fan of mirrored engine hatches.

I am lucky when it comes to that, may buddy owns a plastic shop, perception plastics 509-624-5408. Any plastic shop should be able to get it for you. I used 3m tape and then used screws with caps around the sides and never had a issue.
the tape holds the middle from moving.
One thing that i did have to do was make a splatter shild and install it over the drive coupler, it would throw greese up on the mirros after i greesed the fittings. And cleaning greese off is no fun. By the way only use cleaners that are made for plastic only!

MirrorPlex works well without adding the weight of stainless.

Attach easily with good quality 3M double-sided tape. Most any glass shop in your area will cut to your dimensions. DO NOT scratch the back side of the plexi when installing, it will show as a scratch when installed.

I like the Fountain in the mirror thats cool. Did ya do the sides yourself? looks good:drink:

Did the hatches and sides myself, Fountain name/logo are a dark gray metallic decal. Looks like the mirrorplex is ecthed from a few feet away, especially with the lights on.

Side mirrors are great for checking engines over at start-up, can see both sides and bottoms of each engine from above.

3M tape is all you used? You never had a problem with it coming loose?

Rebel_Heart 10-08-2010 12:15 AM

Kelly O

Where did you get the mirrors with Fountain etched in them? Very nicely done.

I second this, the heat from the motors don't loosen the tape up?

Rebel_Heart, he said they were a decal just a couple post up.
I agree, they look great!

The 03 35 I had them on two years when traded, never loosened up.
The 09 35, one corner of a hatch mirror did loosen up. Added a little more tape and it has been fine.

Be generous with the tape, I did perimeters about 1.5" from edge, then strips full width about 6" apart. High quality tape and proper prep are key. Think the hatches required about $50 worth of tape from auto body supply store, the stuff used to attach side moldings to car exteriors.

Metallic vinyl decals do give the appearance of etched mirror. Next time I will stack two colors, a light silver metallic outlined by dark grey to really get the effect.

mcprodesign 10-08-2010 11:35 AM

Use this stuff.

http://www.amazon.com/3M-Automotive-.../dp/B000P1ALNU

on the surface you want the tape to stick too .

I WILL NEVER COME OFF!

I guarantee it. Been a bodyman 30 years and this stuff is the bomb.
carry on.. Looks great BTW :D
