Until recently the only cover I had for my boat was the cockpit cover and before I was able to acquire a full cover I had a severe attack of spiders. The rear of the boat to include the swim platform was covered. The little black dots were easy to remove but left behind were gray stains that are extremely difficult to remove. They appear to be etched in the gelcoat. I have tried: simple green, rubbing compound, metal polish, ajax cleaner, clorox bathroom cleaner, Drop-Off dropping cleaner(doesn't work don't buy it) and cleaner wax. The cleaner wax works but it takes forever when doing it by hand. The problem with it being it leaves a haze that is visible in direct light. My questions are:

1. Is there any easy way to get the underlying gray stain out of the gelcoat without damaging it? (BTW the non-skid still has stains.)

2. What's the best way to polish out the areas where I removed the stain with cleaner wax and left a haze?

Maybe give roll off and magic erasers a try... has worked well for me!

I second magic eraser.

Be very careful using Magic Erasers on gloss fiberglass. It has abrasives that will leave real fine scratches on the surface. You can usually polish them out, but if not you will have dull spots all over. You might be amazed what a few days in the sun will do for those grey stains also. My center console was host to some kinda sado-masochistic goose love fest this summer and I had poop and blood stains all over the inside. I cleaned it as well as I could and tried On-Off on the stains and they were still pretty bad. After about 2 weeks in the sun, GONE. And that was mostly on non-skid.

I've found the same thing with vinyl. I scrape off the black and underneath is more of an orange dot. I've tried just about everything, but I think that sun must do wonders because they seem to disappear after awhile.

The Sun &/or Lubricated Magic Eraser (spray some tub and tile directly onto and scrub away) for the non skid. If they're bad spider stains then buffing with a rotary for the gel. If you're not the best at buffing check the "How I use leverage" thread in the fiberglass section for buffing instructions.
