Need advice on what GPS to get

Hey guys I have a 27 ft fever. I live in North Dakota I boat on Lake Sakakawea and the Missouri river was just wondering what would be the best GPS system for around a 1000.00 to use. Should I go with a GPS fish finder or something else. Would like any good opinions.

Thanks In advance
Jerry

I have had good luck with the Garmin products. The 400 and 500 series are in your price range and come with a fish finder if you want it. There is also a map upgrade you can get with detail you wont believe.

Thanks the only reason I was thinking fish finder to was for the depth finder and temp. I will look into it I have been told that the new lorance are not so good.

I have a brand new in the box Garmin 172c a bit older, but if you buy the blue chart chip for $150 it would be a easy/cheap gps system for you.Let me know...

I had a Garmin 172C in my last Fountain and loved it. Easy to use and easy to read. I would have bought yours if i had seen it before buying a new GPS for the new boat.

I purchased a Garmin 535 GPS and so far like it too. Do a Google search and that will show you where all the good deals are. You can buy a new 535 for about $550 or if you want the fish finder/depth indicator option you will pay about $900. I would contact the person with the 172C, it should work well for you.
Good luck.

I have a Garmin 492, no depth finder but it shows water depth on chart at MLW. I use it at night mostly for the backtrack feature, 15-18 miles trip at night time it's good to know I'm out of the crab pots.

I agree with speedfreek. Seeing the depths and hazards ahead of you can keep you out of trouble. The optional Garmin vision charts have the marinas and land features like hotels, parks, and gas stations.
