27 Fever Fuel Gauge Reading Issues

My boat fuel guage is inaccurate. Its has about a 40-50% accuracy. I assume this becuase I run out of gas when it reads half full. When I go to re-fill it, it takes full tank capacity, which I believe is about 70 gallons. I learned this the hard way (I was wondering way it took so long to come off full . I believe the sending unit arm is bent, if it has one, or the float is sticking. Anyone experience this?? Where exactly is the tank sending unit on a 27 Fever?? I'm going to start there. Any help or suggestions is appreciated! thx. Jon

My experience will all of my Fountains is that it reads full, when sitting in the water, until it is actually near empty. When the needle starts to "swing" around while boating, you had better be thinking about getting fuel. I believe this is the same experience that 99.9% of everyone else with a Fountain has, or will admit to.

Also, when filling your boat with fuel, you need to listen to what you hear at the air vent. When you hear a gurgling sound you better slow down the gas pump or you and the boat will be wearing fuel! They are prone to blow fuel out the air vent and sometimes out the fuel fill, if filling too fast or getting close to full. More than once, my boat looked like a NASCAR car pulling away from the pits with fuel streaking out the air vent as I started down the road, just after "filling" the boat's fuel tank (s).

Not to sure, but my mate has a 27 fountain, and he has a 60gallon tank which was/is standard with the 27's i think... we've run out of gas once or twice with the needle reading 1/2 full..lol now we just stop for gas any time we see a gas station

Is there any way to fix this problem

bob_t 03-26-2011 02:36 PM

I've been told it has to do with the shape of the fuel tank not being a rectangle but more of a squashed and stretched pyramid, but I can't verify that. I didn't really ever think about looking at the gas tank shape in detail during my trips to the factory. Also, I would think that the fuel tank not sitting parallel to the water (ie, the boat sits on an angle in the water) would contribute to the sender reading more fuel than volumetrically in the tank. If you put the sender in the fwd end of the tank, it would probably just the opposite .... ususally reading low.

I gave up on the in tank sender. For the cost of the repair again I elected to install Lowrance ep60r fuel senders to keep tabs on fuel usage. Waiting on motors to be completed, so I haven't seen these senders in use, but have read accurate to 1/10th a gallon over a 100 gallon run.

What about those sending units that livorsi and the others sell that are adjustable with screws? The ones without the float arms? I mean, even with a tank being a weird shape, i would still think there has to be a better way to measure the liquid in the tank. What good is a fuel gauge if the only reading you get is FULL or empty and nothing in between.

Check it when the boat is on the trailer

or at WOT..

that is the only time My fuel guage on my 27 is accurate

becuase that is when the boat is level..

And it is pretty accurate..

Just check it before you launch. I know you are not burning 60 Gals of fuel in one day .. or are you ??

mcprodesign 03-26-2011 06:06 PM

1/2 tank is like 1/3 though

That's what I do too before I hook the boat to truck, and usually when I get back to the storage unit (check it on the trailer with the boat floor sitting as level as I can get it). It appears to be pretty accurate when I do that. While boating, once I see the needle start swinging a lot, I know I should be heading for fuel or the trailer. :D

carcommander 03-27-2011 07:49 AM

I was informed that they all suck. When I am running if the needle moves off full at all then I have half a tank. Mine has a 69 gallon tank. I just fill the tank when the needle starts moving. If it shows half a tank then you have about 15 gallons left.

thx! I'm not burning 60 gal a day! Is that what the the capacity is on a 27 Fever? I've been topping it off everday im out on the water to play it safe. I just wish it was more accurate!

i know, thats what ive been doing lately! The gas pouring out of the vent is a pain in the a@@ too. gets all over the boat! i think the vent tube has a low spot in it and collects some gas it it and it gets pushed out when filling!

Thx! I have the same problem. The gas pouring out of the vent is a pain in the a@@ too. gets all over the boat! i think the vent tube has a low spot in it and collects some gas it it and it gets pushed out when filling (gas volume displacing the air volume) Or the vent tube enters to low in the tank. I had a Baja that did the same thing but i used to blow into the vent and i could hear gas surge back into the tank, and then it wouldn't do it. I am going to look to see if I can remedy this!

ya, i hear ya. i thought the boat was good on gas when I first got it until it ran out at 1/2 on the needle

my 27has a 63gal tank.i know this because i drained it empty.when the gage is @3/4,its at half tank.at 1/2 tank gage reading ,it is at 1/4 tank fuel,if the gage goes passed 1/2 gage i am almost empty.its the way the tank is built and how it sits in the boat.i have heard that some 27 fountains have 70gal tank.

How did you drain your tank? I undid the cut off valve in the engine compartment. I can only get 90 of the supposedly 118 gallons advertised out. I know the tank was full.

Hmmm. How many gallons you ever put in? You think US1 would know for sure? I have a hand fuel pump attached to the hoses after the shutoff valves in the bottom of the bilge. Tomorrow, I'm going to just stick a hose in the fuel fill and see if I can get more out.

Wildman_grafix 03-28-2011 09:20 AM

I have added at least 85 but never let it get empty.

Maybe Jerry has ran his dry before.

i put a jack under the traylor and got the boat on a incline and kept rasing and lowering the boat till i got it all out.it was a pain in the azz and took awile.i did this because the guy i bought the boat from swore up/and down that it had a 75-80 gal tank.he was wrong.i may be 1-2gal off,but thats it.i have run out of gas too many times to know diffrent.

I think it's around 60 gallons.. Do you know how much that weighs?
Mine has 2 aluminum side tanks installed in the engine bay. I run the front one dry and the boats goes a lot faster and feels lighter. What I am saying is.. A full forward tank in a 27 takes a lot of performance out of your boat.

Edit; Carry a 5 gallon can of fuel w you. then when it runs out of fuel.. Then you will know for sure. (Don't run it out of fuel at wide open throttle though). i think it is 58-62 gals. on the 27's
