38 Lightning, staggered 700s, NXT drives

Experiences on this package, anyone?
Performance report says it's pretty fast, at 115mph.
But what about handling and reliability?
Thanks in advance!

Have owned our 38/700 for 3 years. Love it. Runs 114, on the best days, runs 110 anytime. Motors have been trouble free for 140 hrs. Boat handles like its on rails.
You have to run 91 octane fuel, and the boat comes set up with 6 blade Herring's for props. They have NXT transmissions, and gimbals, and #6 lowers.

Sounds like an awesome package!!!

Randy has a seriously beautiful boat, and it runs like a scalded dog. Learned the hard way the first time I met him... his cruise speed is just a hair faster than my "reasonable" cruise speed :coolcowboy::coolcowboy::lolhit:

Yep, I know. But I've read very little on that drive.
Is it as reliable as a full fledged #6, for this kind of power?

Beak Boater 04-23-2011 06:37 AM

Its proven reliable for us, their are some who say the transmission is suspect, but havent had any problems. With Whipple reprograming the ecu's on the 700's some are running as much as 800-850 hp through these set ups.

I see that yours is a 2007, so I guess she should be similar to this one, which is for sale in Europe.
Do you have a ballpark idea of the current market value in the US, for a boat like this?
Even considering transport, VAT, duties - and that she has clocked just 35 hours - the asking price seems OTT, at one third of a million $...

They do use a full fledge #6 drive just not transom assembly.

Jpzaluski 04-23-2011 11:41 PM

I may be wrong but I thought Randy's boat had an NXT trans and upper and a six lower? Or something along those lines.

Beak Boater 04-24-2011 05:38 AM

It does. #6 drive bolted to the NXT gimbal, and transmission.

it is an early 07, does not have cup holders built into corner of dash on each side. later 07 have one peice wrap around with cup holders andno side pannel next to driver and passenger.Later 07 I think have new cabin.
But a greay looking boat.

Have an 07/38 with about 85 hours, 25 of them mine. Ridiculously fast with huge mid range pull. Super reliable, love the 700's. Attention getter with the rooster. Cruises at 90, 100 anytime. Have had it to 111 but there is more there. Have fired the boat but not driven yet this season. Hopefully this weekend.:evilb:
