he guys I am just gettin into the powerboat world. I have been shopping and want to know if Fountain would be a good first choice. Looking for twin engine. I have a question about the Fountains: I have always had throttles on the right side. Why are Fountains on the left side? Is it tough to get used to?

No its easy to get use to.. What size are you looking for? where do you boat Lake Norman?

I don't know what size yet. I was hoping to get a direction from the forums. I want twin engines. I want to run at least 70. I have been told Reggie Fountain did a great job of getting the most speed out of his boats w/o killing your wallet to bad. Best bang for the buck so to speak. It would probably be between 29 and 35 feet.

I have looked at a 30' Hallett, 272 Formula, Baja and still have not narrowed it down. The Hallett is cool because there are not many on the east coast. Still shopping.

My home lake is Lake Wylie but I am interested in running some poker runs and seeing some different lakes. What better way to do that than at 65mph plus :drink:

OK been reading on the forums to long now I am even more confused. Guys who bought 29s wish they waited on a 35. Starting out should I go with a 32 or get a 35. I know the money will be more but if you buy what you want or should it will be cheaper in the long run. i stillwant to run 70 plus. what do you guys think?

32 is a great all around boat hard to work on the engines (real tight engine room) 35 is also a great all around boat lots of them out there! her is a nice 29 (old school) cheep!

I have a 29 and when I go bigger I will move into a 35. It is a natural progression IMO to want to go bigger. Some have gone bigger and then went back smaller. Alot of factors come into play: Do you trailer your boat alot or have it stored/on a launch? Availability of boat launches to support a bigger boat?
Just like wanting more HP and speed the size bug can bite you as well.
I love my 29 and I am sure you can find some nice ones in your price range to meet your speed requirements. The Fountains are constructed very solidly so you do not have to worry to much about buying an older year boat. It is all about how the previous owner(s) have taken care of them.

I would think a 29 with a single HP500 would get you mid 70s easy.

Ya but a twin engine turn key 29 w/small blocks that is not transom heavy and on a trailer for 19k! and a cool piece of fountain nostalga I dont think he would get hurt if he wants to flip out of it somday ... Gets him in a Fountain Cheep:drink:

When I decided to buy a Fountain I went to a 35, I have never regretted it, lots of room to get to the engines, twin 540 cu. inch,
sits nice in the water, rides great, easy to handle around the docks, with the left hand controls you can stand in the center of the boat to dock on either side easily.

I wouldn't waste my money on that 29 with the alfa drives, unless you're the type of person that will be completely content with it. Yes, the boat is fairly cheap, but I'd have upgradeitous within a day of buying it!

Get the larger boat now and get it with what you think you'll want in it for power and drives, it will save you a lot more in the long run.

Also, not to pick on the Fountain guys (I really do like Fountains!), but as everyone is always joking around about these boats... Once you subtract the lenght of the 'beak' and the swim platform (if so equiped), a Fountain is typically a much smaller boat than most other manufatures boats of the same size classification.

For these reasons, I would highly recommend you get at least a 35 if you're considering 29-35 Fountains.

get a 29. If your new to boating getting something over 30ft would be a handful and a lot of boat. I had 23 crownline now I have a 29ft fever and its a differenence. Twin 29 will do 70+ some of the newer ones do a little better than that. You get used to the throttles on the left, although I must say I dont really care for it that way. The only reason I think is Reggie was maybe a lefty and it keeps your dominate hand on the wheel.

Also you might get away with half ton with a 29 I wouldnt do it but you could probably get away with it But you start talking 32-35 your going to need a F250 bare minimum. So be sure a to keep a tow vehicle in mind.

Personally I would skip the 32 unless you get some big engines its not going to go any faster and probably slower than a 29.


If you are new to boating all together do not go out and buy a boat that cost a ton of coin. You will be surprised at the up keep and runnning cost on these boats. Get your self a 27-29ft Fountain thats mid to late 90's and see how it goes. You love it and want bigger or better sell and move up. You dont like it and you have a nice boat that is in the 30-40k range you wont have a problem selling.

Fountain is a premium name, others like Baja, PQ, checkmate are nice no doubt but they will never be a fountain. Fountains come standard with just about everything as well.

Dont know what fountain has alpha drives besides that 89 on here? My 29 has bravos, pretty sure there isnt a fountain out there with a BBC in it that has an alpha.

That boat is cheap but its way under powered and probably will only go 60. Good for the money, although think you would have a hard time on resale, and if you wanted bigger motors you not only would have to buy engines but drives likes you said.

Hey guys Ive decided to go with a Fountain. Looking between 29-35 feet. I am searching the for sale sites and if you run accross anything else please let me know. I am trying to keep it under $45k so I know it is going to be older. I would like it to hit 70mph. Looking forward to finding one and getting it on the water. South Carolina has a long boating season. I have a few things that I could trade towards the boat. A 1989 Mastercraft and/or a 2004 custom bobber w/ 100" Revtech. Lets find me a boat!!:evilb:

Dont rush end of summer is coming and people will be selling so they dont have store. Also the market is low and these boats arent worth a whole lot, so you can be choosy.

Either way something from a 90 to about 98 will be your range in years. Unless you get extremely lucky.

Also finding somebody that wants to be trade will be slim. And a dealer is going to hose you. On your 89 that is probably worth 5-7k tops a dealer would give you 2 grand.

Chances of finding someone that wants to trade for those things is slim, unless you want to get bent over by a dealer who's licking his chops waiting for you to come walking in. Sell them privately and then go looking for your boat. Best time to buy a boat is late fall when people are looking to dump them before they have to pay to store them.

Good luck with finding your boat. I'd bet you will come across something in that range fairly easily if you put your feelers out. You might contact Scott Shogren, good guy to work with and let him know what you are looking for in case he gets something similar to what you are looking for.
