Just wondering with 496's what this boat would run with a normal load.

What is it worth with 496's? Looks nice, I like the dash layout, and silver paint.

Good looking boat!!!

Sure is. Even the engine compartment looks nice. Normally the 496's are butt ugly.

With ITS, shorties, CMI headers, ECM upgrades and labbed props, I would say 83-84 everyday, and 85-87 light.

Wildman_grafix 08-24-2011 10:06 AM

That isn't bad, don't the 496's last 800 hours if taken care of, with no 250 hour top end overhaul?

Never heard about a rebuild schedule with 250 hr's for top end. Isn't that the 525 and 600's? They'll last for well over a 1000 hr's if taken care of, and left alone. Oil, impeller, filters, belts, proper storage ect. and you are good to go.

Wildman_grafix 08-24-2011 11:16 AM

Sorry that is what I meant, they DON'T need the top end done at 250 like a 525. 1000 hours,,,,,,,, that is getting close to egg beaters. Wow, that would be nice.

But I wonder how bad having 496's would hurt resale.

A question I always find myself thinking about as well.

That may be a litte agressive. Buddy of mine has an 06 38 with 525's...best he has seen is 88...same lowers and labbed props. Probably mid 80's best case scenarior...IMO.

Also, those dont appear to be shorties...they look like standard length Sportmasters.

Just read your previous post. You did put it right, I'm just blind or too caught up in work. I think the best I've seen personally is about 1600 hr's. That was a bit tired, but had only had the drive rebuild.

I would say, in that case yes. But I've seen them run 91-93 with 525EFI's. I've also seen performance reports with 95-96 numbers. I honestly don't think it's far off.

Hey Wildman...it sounds like you almost have yourself talked into it! LOL Go for it.:drink::drink::drink:

Keep in mind where Fountain does their reports...on the Pemblico River. Just about every one I have seen is a little faster than real world conditions. I dont disagree with you though...a perfectly dialed, ideal water and air in a 38 w 525s and labbed props may see low 90's.

Yeah, the reports are abit out there. Dialed a friends 38 in a few yr's ago, and it ran 91-93 with Throttle-Up props.
Even if running "only" 82-83, that is not too shabby, and one helluwa reliable and "cheap-to-run" package.

I know the boat. He is local here in eastern N.C.. You have probably never met anyone that is as particular as the owner is. I have never ran beside him @ wot but it seems to cruise well. As a matter of fact, thats all I've seen him do is cruise hince the name 45 MPH FRANK.

Interceptor 08-24-2011 05:35 PM

Nice looking boat. Not stupid crazy power. Probably very reliable.

Marginmn 08-24-2011 06:33 PM

I've spoken to the owner. When it came out of the factory with -2's it ran a bit over 80's with a normal load and ideal conditions. With the current setup of standard length XR's it's running 75 under normal conditions.

Great looking boat.

acaruso 08-25-2011 08:00 AM

496 has cast pistions might shatter if you run them hard :lolhit:

Did he say why he went to standard length lowers?

Yea yea I'll get my check book out! :lolhit: Just seen it and thought it was nice but never seen one with 496's.

What does a 38 weight?

breakitout 08-25-2011 08:43 AM

awesome paint on that 38.. dont put skulls and flames all over that one! :lolhit:
