What to look for 98 42 Fountain
 

Going to sea trial a 1998 Fountain 42 with triple carbed 525's Just over 200 hours on engines. Fresh Water only. Thanks for your insight in advance.

Check the top of the gimbal rings for cracks. Make sure the drives all go down and up evenly.

I ran a 1993 with the same power for a season. Be prepared to use a bunch of 93 octane. See how they start cold and idle, we did power valves and plugs and still had some issues. New owner had the carbs rebuilt and blowers sent in and it appears fine now. Don't use the Merc Holley kits, they are about $325 each. I can send you the survey that was done on ours if you like to read it over and compare to this boat.

looks like you are coming to rhode island .looks like a good deal. you can just take out center motor and run twin side by side.

That old, probably needs new transom and stringers. Survey should indicate how soggy these are.

Replacing stringers and transoms are easy and cheap. See pictures in "47 Fountain to RF" thread.

Then you can end up with a staggered twin and a spare engine.

Re-rigging isn't chump change, but the existing wiring, control cables, indicator cables, pumps, blowers, lights, plumbing, and hydraulic hoses, must be beyond end of life by now.
