mikesystem01 05-06-2012 07:45 PM

love to know what that would cost

Racerngr1 05-07-2012 07:45 PM

I think I have an aluminum tank, is this something I need to worry about?

proboat-wes 05-07-2012 07:53 PM

absolutley not ,just the crappy fiberous bladder tanks from atl and the way they were installed by fountain.
failure in the first 5 years for an 80 lb weight savings and tanks alone are $6000.00 plus labor and fiberglass work i would think a class action lawsuit should be in order,my 2-cents

jmoore1225 05-08-2012 12:32 AM

ya, lawsuits fix everyrthing.........

chattviper 05-08-2012 07:56 AM

I had Fountain change mine to aluminum last winter. There was over 50 gallons of fuel in the sub floor from the leaking bladders.

Its very expensive to change out and it be done right. I'm so happy I did it though!

How much is very expensive? Just curious..

4K for each aluminum tank to start...you can imagine the labor to remove bladders, suck out all the fuel below subfloor, remove entire cockpit to cut holes for tanks, install gas tanks, subfloor and upholstery.

So about a 20k project on a 42'?

Spinletto 05-10-2012 06:18 AM

Does anyone know which models and what years had these fligerglass bladders?

chattviper 05-10-2012 07:35 AM

Yep, and I think all the PR boats originally had bladders. I could be wrong.

Ouch!

I called fountain just because I was curious and Gail told me that you were right that they only installed the bladders in the "some" of the Poker Run boats. She told me that these bladders were not designed to last forever. Glad to know that my boat doesn’t have one. Lord knows I’ve already had to throw enough money at my boat I’d hate to have to replace the fuel tank for 20K someday as well.

By the way I also asked what going on with the factory and she said that their selling a lot of parts but not building any boats. She said they go back to court next week and should know more then.

proboat-wes 05-10-2012 08:29 PM

they were not fiberglass bladders, more of a vinyl reinforced bladder interesting project for our shop.. rubber hosed 5/8 fuel pick up was completely melted looking at the inlet ,just like it had been hit with a torch to heat shrink it,explains why the engines were bogging at upper rpm"s

weldcrane 05-10-2012 09:41 PM

who made the bladders for fountain?

Some of the OuterLimits boats have the same issue. As for the question, "Why did the builders take so much risk to save just a few lbs?" Well, remember back in the day Fountain and OL were battling tooth and nail in Powerboat to put up the big top end numbers and reducing the weight of the tanks on the Poker Run models may have given them a mph or two. In hindsight, obviously it was a terrible idea. But as the classic saying goes..... It seemed like a good idea at the time!

proboat-wes 05-11-2012 08:18 PM

you are definitley right on the weight ,but from what we have figured the total savings is close to appx.160 lbs to 200 lbs..it lets you bring 4 more cases of beer and ice LOL..

in 2006 i had the alum tanks replaced in my 35 at the factory . it was around $10500.00 total if i remember right.
