Marine Air Generator Question
 

I've said I would never do it, because I always thought it was such a band aid, but I've considered purchasing a Honda generator to use while on anchor overnight to run the Marine Air system that came factory in my Fountain. Use would be minimal, and only to run A/C. Does anyone know what size I could get away with? I see they make a eu1000, but not sure if that'd be enough. Any input? I can't necessarily justify the cost, or weight of a marine genset for the 1 out of 99 times I'll use it.

Ask Freaky Fast...he has a custom setup he did...it is pimp....kind of...ok..maybe not.

I have A MERMAID 6500 btu in the Fountain that will run off a 1000W, according to Mermaid.
My cruiser has a 10k unit. That one needs 2000W

Honda EU2000i will work fine.

Is the 1000 watt too small? Do I have to worry about exhaust burns or discoloring on the back of the boat? If that's even a risk I don't want to do it.

Nah, the RPBA has been doing this for years, probably 10 of us total. You can put it on the swim plaform and just angle the tiny exhuast away from the boat. If you are going to ride the hook for the night, you might want to put a ratchet strap across it just to be sure. They work perfect for this.

Do a search on here on "EU2000i". Almost everyone runs an external genny like such uses the EU2000i. Hell, ETicket even installs them in the bilge. :eek:

There is also a "hard start kit" which is basically a resister that keeps the genny from dying if the compressor is just a shade to much for the genny to handle when it kicks in.

W/o knowing what size AC unit you have, no one can say what size gen will work. As stated earlier, my 10k unit needs a 2000W gen, where as a buddies 12k unit needs 2 2000W ran in parallel. We tried the a hard start on his last month as he is right on the edge, didn't work for him.

What size AC??

US1.... that's part of my question. I have no idea what size it is, I just know that it is the factory installed unit from Fountain. I would assume they would have always used the same?
